Sea Scout Ship 502 Ship 502 is a youth-led, fun loving group that enjoys all things water -- sailing, canoeing, swimming

Sea Scouts is a coed program offered to young adults between the ages of 13 and 20 who love the water. Sea Scout groups - called ships- have been established all across the country and the world. Being involved in a Sea Scout ship opens up opportunities for adventure and exciting challenges you wont find anywhere else. Ship 502 has a history of high standards and achievement, producing 4 National Boatswains, 3 Koch Cup International Regatta Boatswains and multiple Quartermasters; named National Flagship in 2002

Sea Scout Ship 502 will have a Bridge of Honor at 2 p.m., Sat., Jan. 3, at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, 11507 Huffmeister Road. The event will be in Parish Hall.
We plan to have youth recognized for their advancements, including at least three who have earned the Quartermaster rank.

Congrats to the three newly minted OA Vigil members from Ship 502, who went through Vigil ceremonies this past weekend at Camp Strake.
Earning the award were youths Lily Escobar and Chris DeBetta. The adult was Marcia Schleiniger.
That makes 13 Vigil members from Ship 502 in the past three years.

Former Ship 502 member Jewell Norris teaching last weekend at Seabadge 81-NY-25 at the Summit Bechtel Reserve. The event took place in Glen Jean, West Virginia.
Jewell, who is from Cypress in Northwest Houston, also is a former National Boatswain when she was an undergrad at Mississippi State University.

Four from Ship 502 were able to work at the Houston Food Bank on Friday to assist needy families in Greater Houston.
Ship member Luis Torres set up a project with his company, Microsoft, and allowed the other Sea Scout adults to help. They were Cynthia Swenceski, Cassie Johnson and Neal Farmer.
The quartet helped approximately 20 others from Luis’ company count and classify 18 pallets of donated food at the Houston Food Bank headquarters, which was estimated at 9,263 pounds of food for the poor.

Sea Scouts were represented this weekend at the Ministry Fair at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Cypress. CtR is the chartering organization for Ship 502 and is a great supprter of Scouts. The church also sponsors Troop 573 and Cub Scout Pack 573

Ship 502 went for a sail on Sunday, in Galveston Bay.
The youth learned point of sail, the way the angle of the wind hits the sail. Youth also learned nomenclature.
Youth also kept a deck log during the trip.
Ship 502 lore also was discussed. And, Ship members fought a great, white whale — and won.

Congrats to Lily E., from Ship 502, who received her Quartermaster medal in Sea Scouts and her Eagle medal in Scouting America in a rare double-award, Bridge/Court of Honor ceremony on Saturday at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church.
Lily pulled a Taylor Swift and started her ceremony in her Scouting America uniform for her Eagle and then switched into her Sea Scouts uniform for the Quartermaster recognition.
Lily is just a few requirements away from her Gold Award in Girl Scouts.
She recently graduated from Cypress Woods High School.
And she received a full scholarship from the U.S. Navy to study nursing at Loyola University in Chicago.
Also, Lily is the National Boatswain-elect for Sea Scouts, and will be the National Boatswain during the 2026-2027 academic year in college. She will be the fifth National Boatswain from Ship 502 and the sixth National Boatswain from the Sam Houston Area Council.

We are proud to announce that Lily E. from Ship 502 in the Sam Houston Area Council has received a full scholarship from the U.S. Navy to study nursing at Loyola University in Chicago.
Lily has received her Eagle Scout rank, is working on her Quartermaster Award — which is the highest rank in Sea Scouts — and is working on her Gold Award in Girl Scouts.
Also, Lily recently was named National Boatswain-elect for Sea Scouts during the 2025-26 school year. She will train on the National Quarterdeck this next academic year and then become National Boatswain in 2026-27 when a sophomore in college. The National Boatswain is in charge of program for the youth in Sea Scouts.
That makes six National Boatswains for SHAC since 2004. They are James Houghton (2004-2005, Ship 502), Monica Traylor (2008-2009, Ship 502), Eva Hogan (2011-2012, Ship 502), Matthew Miller (2012-2013, Ship 24), and Jewell Norris (2022-2023, Ship 502).
