Hi everyone — my name is Nazia Iftekhar, and I’m a board-certified family nurse practitioner with over 15 years in healthcare.
Recently, my work has become deeply focused on helping children with autism through a functional medicine approach.
As someone who is neurodivergent myself and also a parent of a child with autism, this work is deeply personal to me. It has shaped the way I listen, the way I observe patterns, and the way I support families navigating complex medical questions.
One of my strengths is connecting the dots — looking at nutrition, labs, gut health, metabolism, and neurologic function together instead of in isolation. I love helping families take complicated information and break it down step-by-step without overwhelm, always with compassion and respect.
Much of my work now centers around helping families of children with autism explore root-cause contributors that are often overlooked.
Recently I’ve also been helping introduce leucovorin therapy in carefully selected patients when there is evidence suggesting cerebral folate deficiency, particularly in some non-verbal children. Seeing the progress some families experience is incredibly humbling and rewarding.
I’m also excited to be attending the MAPS Conference, where clinicians from around the world gather to learn about emerging research and nuanced interventions that can support children with complex developmental needs.
I’m currently accepting new patients and work with families both locally and via telehealth. If your family has been searching for a deeper, root-cause approach to autism care, you’re always welcome to reach out or learn more about my practice.
And a small reflection:
Sometimes when you see a need, the system around you may not be built to address it.
Instead of becoming frustrated…
build something that does.
Find your niche. Serve it with sincerity.
The people who need you will find you.
💙

If BV or yeast keeps coming back, it’s usually not because of hygiene — and it’s not because you’re doing something wrong.

The va**na is an ecosystem.
When that balance is disrupted (especially after a period), protective bacteria drop, pH rises, and symptoms like odor or discharge show up again.
This is why quick fixes don’t always last.

Antibiotics and antifungals can be helpful short-term, but repeating them over and over can actually make things worse.
They often wipe out the good bacteria along with the bad, leaving the va**nal environment even more vulnerable to the next flare.
That’s when people get stuck in the cycle: BV → treatment → yeast → treatment → BV again.

A more sustainable approach looks at: • restoring va**nal pH
• rebuilding protective bacteria
• supporting the gut–va**nal connection
• strengthening the body’s own defenses

Vaginal health isn’t about sterilizing the area or constantly “killing something.”
It’s about creating the conditions where balance can hold on its own.
If infections keep returning, it may be time to stop chasing symptoms and start supporting the ecosystem underneath them. 🌸💖🌿👍💪

🧘‍♀️ L-Theanine: Calming the Nervous System Without Sedation

L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid found primarily in green tea (Camellia sinensis). It is well known for promoting a state of calm alertness—reducing stress and anxiety without causing sedation or cognitive dulling, which makes it particularly useful for patients who are sensitive to medications or supplements.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Nutrients (2019) evaluated L-theanine supplementation in adults with stress-related symptoms and found significant improvements in stress, anxiety, sleep quality, and cognitive performance, particularly in attention and executive function.
Mechanistically, L-theanine:
Increases alpha brain wave activity, associated with relaxed focus
Modulates GABA, serotonin, and dopamine neurotransmission
Helps blunt sympathetic (fight-or-flight) overactivation
“L-theanine intake was associated with reduced stress-related symptoms and improved sleep quality and cognitive performance.”

— Hidese et al., Nutrients, 2019
📌 Clinical relevance in functional medicine:
Useful for anxiety, hypervigilance, and sleep-onset difficulty
Often well tolerated in neurodivergent children and adults
Can support focus and emotional regulation without stimulant effects
Commonly paired with magnesium or omega-3s for synergistic calming support

📌 Why I use it in practice:
L-theanine supports nervous system regulation in a gentle, non-sedating way, making it a practical option for patients who need calming support during the day or improved sleep initiation at night.

Why do I prefer virtual visits for families of children with Autism?

Because getting to the appointment is often half the struggle.
In-person visits can mean managing behaviors, gathering information, worrying about elopement, and trying to communicate—all at the same time. That’s a lot for any parent.
When we meet virtually, from the comfort of home, everything changes.
Children are more regulated. Medications and supplements are right there. I get to observe the child in their natural environment—and parents can focus on the conversation.
And sometimes? You get a surprise Zoom appearance from one of these guys 🐱
I promise—they’re purrr-fectly HIPAA compliant.
I also offer after-hours and weekend appointments to minimize disruption to your family’s daily routine—because care should work with your life, not against it.

Hello Chicago…
This city shaped me.
I grew up here. I learned resilience here. I was still finding my way—life lessons unfolding alongside my undergraduate years at University of Illinois Chicago.
The skyline witnessed the becoming.
The grit.
The growth.
Now, being able to care for patients across Illinois through telemedicine feels like a full-circle moment.
Chicago, it’s an honor to give back—quietly, intentionally, and with care that goes deeper than the surface. 🖤🏙️
