Health Update
I wanted to share a health update here, as many of you are clients, colleagues, or friends. ๐
Iโm okay โ very tender and still in the healing process โ but finally moving in the right direction after things peaked around Christmas.
More importantly, Iโve been able to get to the root of whatโs been making me so sick for a long time.
What Iโve been dealing with has not been MCAS or food allergies, as I was repeatedly told by doctors. At the core, this has been a deeply dysregulated nervous system that had been under prolonged strain. There were multiple layers contributing to this, including long-term SSRI withdrawal, becoming re-sensitized after briefly restarting them last summer, steroid withdrawal, chronic stress, and life-stage factors. At 58, and having gone through menopause in recent years, you could fairly call it a perfect storm.
The symptoms have been intense and frightening at times โ burning, itching, buzzing, heat, pain, and extreme sensitivity. These reactions werenโt dangerous, but they were severe, and they are still present as my nervous system relearns how to self-regulate.
This kind of healing isnโt quick. It requires time, consistency, and restraint. Too much stimulation, activity, or stress can send me back into a flare, so for now Iโm living much more slowly and intentionally than Iโm used to. Thatโs been humbling โ and necessary.
The good news is that nothing is โbroken.โ This is functional, not structural, and it is reversible. My focus right now is on re-regulating my nervous system and preventing relapse, which means:
โข steady meals with protein to support blood sugar
โข minimizing stimulation (especially news and intense content)
โข honoring rest instead of pushing through
โข keeping my world smaller and quieter for now
โข holding clearer boundaries around my time, energy, and emotional bandwidth
โข choosing containment and calm over urgency
I also want to share that I was only able to connect these dots by deeply researching, tracking patterns, and having long, detailed conversations using ChatGPT โ after nearly two years of doctors not being able to figure out what was happening or offering anything beyond additional medication. Love it or hate it, AI helped me understand what my body was actually doing in a way nothing else had.
I want to be clear that Iโm not anti-medication. Meds for anxiety and depression can be incredibly helpful and even life-saving โ they certainly were for me at different points in my life. What I do strongly encourage is working with a doctor who is attentive, present, and supportive, especially during long-term use, changes, or tapering.
Iโve also learned a great deal about non-pharmaceutical supports that are especially helpful when the nervous system is involved. Somatic therapy has been invaluable for restoring a sense of safety in the body. Gentle, appropriate breathwork has helped tremendously. Iโve also explored therapies that work directly with the nervous system and the bodyโs electrical and vibrational nature, such as PEMF, vibroacoustic/fibroacoustic therapy, and other frequency-based approaches โ tools that support regulation rather than stimulation.
For me, the biggest lesson has been that healing isnโt one-size-fits-all. Itโs about understanding your body, your history, and your life stage, and finding the right combination of support โ medical, somatic, and nervous-system based โ that truly meets you where you are.
Iโm still in this process, but Iโm no longer lost.
I may be a bit quieter and less available than usual for a while as I protect this healing, and I appreciate your patience and understanding as I move through it with care.
Thank you for holding me with so much grace. ๐
