Opened my messages this morning to another big client win!

35-year-old woman with intense POTS, dizziness, and neck pain. Months ago, she was mostly bed-ridden as any amount of movement or standing would cause intense symptoms. This forced her into moving back home with her parents where she felt trapped physically and emotionally. We've been focused on exploring the emotions of her situation and gently challenging her physical symptoms to get back to movement. In her message this morning she had to share that she had walked an entire mile for the first time in 1.5 years! Walking across the room was extremely difficult and scary only a handful of months ago.

It is so important to celebrate each milestone in recovery from chronic symptoms. It is these wins that build confidence and momentum, which is so extremely valuable in a process where you start with so little of both and have to endure that for quite some time.

I wanted to celebrate this client win because it demonstrates that progress is often less attached to outcomes and more attached to shifting mindset.

A 69-year-old woman with chronic pain in her back, knees, and hips, along with a host of health challenges attributed to long COVID. In 7 months, she has experienced a lot of improvement in pain and overall health. The win I want to celebrate though is that she came into our last session in a lot of pain and visibly bruised up. In spite of her state, she had a huge smile and couldn't wait to share the win from the last week. She was unloading some heavier groceries from the trunk of her car, got a bit too confident and fell backwards, tumbling a bit down the driveway. While all of this is obviously not ideal, the win was in her reaction to it all. As she lay in the driveway looking up at the sky, groceries scattered about, she laughed a deep belly laugh like she hadn't had in a long time. She was able to avoid falling into the old patterns of fear, worry, defeat, and shame that would have paralyzed her only months ago. She shared that before, an event like this would have stopped her in her tracks and likely set her way back, but today she is able to see it as a result of improvement (carrying groceries and going to the store was impossible not so long ago) and an opportunity to get better.

In recovery from chronic symptoms, mindset is the most important tool you have. Things don't always work out as you would like and that is always ok. It is your mindset and how you react that tells your brain what it should be doing.

I had to celebrate this client win from yesterday!

77-year-old woman dealing with chronic pain in one foot/ankle, hip pain, neck pain, fatigue, brain fog, and intense dizziness with movement. Many of these having deep connections to trauma. She's been making steady progress with the pain, moving more, and working with fear. We met for our session, and she was just radiant with joy and couldn't wait to fill me in on the past two weeks. She met all of her planned goals of walking further, working at some specific tasks at home that were challenging, and approaching things in a playful way. She said that all of that felt too easy, so she really pushed boundaries. She attended a Zumba class on a whim and had a blast! There was some pain following and it was difficult, but after a couple days to recover she went back for a second class, this time with no pain or dizziness! She already had the third class planned for the following day! This is incredible considering that only 5 months ago she had so much fear that she was completely unwilling to challenge her symptoms in any way, even ending our first session together early because she was so terrified. Any movement had to be done in slow motion to avoid overwhelming dizziness and pain. When I asked her what led to the dramatic shift for her, she said it was bringing in play and joy to the work which totally shifted her mindset from "I have to do the work" to "I get to do the work."

I've been doing this work for several years now and I am still consistently amazed at the positive change people can create for themselves, although I'm no longer surprised by it. Simple things like a shift in perspective can make such a huge difference because it's not just a shift in your mind, it is a shift in your biology.

Another big win this week and it's only Tuesday!

65-year-old woman who has been doing the hard work for a couple years now is rapidly picking up momentum in progress and seeing the fruits of her labor. She had been through a lot of trauma, was stuck in an abusive marriage, lots of gastrointestinal pain, trigeminal neuralgia, and fibromyalgia. She had become debilitated by fear, unable to live a normal life in many ways. Today, her sources of pain are mostly gone with some moderate flares now and then, she has been able to do a lot of tough emotional work with her trauma, she can drive and get out of her home again, and she has radically changed her marriage dynamic being able to set and maintain healthy boundaries, working through marriage counseling, and her husband is in anger management courses. A truly amazing transformation from being trapped in fear to an empowered confident woman.

It is amazing how consistent fear and dysregulation of the nervous system can trap us in so many ways. By focusing on nervous system regulation to eliminate the fear, people become able to face the toughest of challenges and work through them.

I have to celebrate the progress and courage of a client to push toward improvement!

44-year-old woman with a long list of chronic pain sources, chronic health conditions, and mental health challenges. She has been making amazing progress, even striking several symptoms from the list completely. She took the big step recently of stopping opioid pain medications and anti-anxiety medications after being on both for decades. She had to be a bit demanding of her doctor to help her do it safely, she was so determined. Even though her pain has temporarily increased, she says she isn't afraid of pain anymore and is celebrating this as a big step forward in her journey! It has been such a privilege to watch the confidence, determination, and progress grow.

Need to share this big client win from this week!

80 yr old gentlemen who developed debilitating phantom limb pain following a double above-knee amputation which made approaching prosthetics impossible and has limited his life in so many ways. At our last session he reported zero pain episodes over the last two weeks! He attributes his success to being able to notice anxiety and fear much earlier and redirect it rather than escalate. For the first time he is feeling confident enough to begin approaching prosthetics and has hope that he will soon be walking again!

A significant win to share from this week!

A client that I've been working with for about a year that came to me with an overwhelming list of symptoms including structural abnormalities, psychological diagnoses, and several medical mysteries. She has been steadily doing the hard work and checking symptoms off of the list as no longer existent, no longer bothersome, or under control. Just to name a few:
Anxiety - under control
PTSD - under control
Tinnitus - gone
Chronic shoulder pain - gone
Chronic hip pain - gone
Chronic knee pain - almost gone
Insomnia - gone
Brain fog - under control
Opioid pain medications - gone

She still has a journey ahead, but with each symptom checked off the list more momentum is gained. To put it in her words, "I no longer feel like I'm falling apart. Now my life is falling back into place at an accelerating rate."

What helped this person begin climbing out of a seemingly bottomless hole? Understanding that all of these apparently separate issues were all part of the same root cause, a nervous system stuck in survival and sensitized over time. Using this understanding to focus energy toward addressing the root cause rather than the symptoms. Are you feeling crushed beneath a long list of symptoms and tired of simply covering them up with band-aids, waiting for the next one to pop up? Are you ready for a different approach that is evidence-based and rooted in the most current neuroscience? Let's have a conversation about what might be possible for you.

Client win from yesterday!

A client with many chronic symptoms following a near-fatal COVID infection several years ago. Her most urgent symptom was atrial fibrillation brought on by stress that really limited her ability to do much of anything. Medications didn't help much, and doctors simply advised her to minimize stress. She reported that over the Christmas holiday she was at a family gathering (this was a big win in itself) and went into afib from stress. She was able to stay calm and use the nervous system soothing tools we had been practicing such as deep breathing and humming. She was so excited when it only lasted 20 minutes and she was able to enjoy the rest of the day without issue! Before, these events would last multiple days where she felt powerless to do anything. She now feels like she has control and doesn't need to fear stress anymore. She is excited to begin challenging herself again knowing that she can calm her heart back down if needed. The excitement and hope she expressed in session is impossible to capture in words!

Another example of how shifting focus to the root cause, a nervous system stuck in survival, can bring about positive change where mainstream medicine falls short. Utilizing simple tools that cost nothing and put the power to heal yourself in your own hands. Send me a message if you want to know more or learn what's possible for you. I'm currently accepting new clients.

A recent win that a fellow coach shared with me:

"I have a new client who came in feeling depressed and experiencing suicidal ideation related to chronic pain. After just one week of practicing nervous system regulation exercises consistently, she’s already noticing relief and sleeping better. She shared, “I could literally feel parts of my body come out of fight-or-flight mode.” During our call today she said that she’s no longer carrying a sense of dread or doom about life that she has for the last 7 years and is beginning to feel hope and even excitement about the future, along with a desire to return to the activities she loves"

A great example of how a nervous system stuck in danger can affect us. As well as the enormous positive impact that can be gained quickly once you shift focus to the real root of the problem. This isn't woo-woo, it's neuroscience, and the results are impossible to ignore. The outdated ways of labeling and diagnosing people as broken, damaged, or diseased and simply managing symptoms with band-aids just don't work. In fact, it often just adds fuel to the fire.

Are you or someone you know feeling stuck? Is mainstream medicine only offering expensive band-aids instead of real solutions? Let's have a conversation about real solutions, reach out to schedule a free discovery session today.

A win from yesterday:

A client who was feeling trapped and unable to express her emotions around an ongoing conflict in her marriage. Having a number of sources of chronic pain that were greatly exacerbated by this. After several weeks of exploring her own emotions to get to the root of what she was feeling and practicing non-violent communication strategies to be able to communicate what she was feeling to her partner in a helpful way, she was able to build courage and confidence to approach the difficult conversation. She showed up to our session unable to stop smiling, feeling a huge sense of relief and renewed confidence! While there was still an initial argument, she felt she had the tools to stay with it, stay calm, and was able to communicate what she needed to. Leading to a happy resolution of the conflict. So often interpersonal relationships are at the core of a dysregulated nervous system. Having the understanding of why and how the nervous system is protecting you from it and the tools/skills to navigate it in a helpful way not only help us feel better, but also help us to improve our relationships.

Today's win!

Newer client with quadriplegia, having paralysis below the chest and weakness in the arms. Any pronounced body movement, such as transferring from chair to bed or leaning forward produced intense body pain. After a single week of approaching the hard things with a different mindset, plenty of nervous system soothing, and somatic tracking they were able to dramatically improve their pain! They spent several hours each day in their manual wheelchair, which they would have avoided before. "I've done more in the last week than I have in the last 3 months! I don't feel trapped in my own body anymore. I can do hard things, even if they are painful at first!" A shining example of what's possible with a positive mindset and a focus on the nervous system. Even when current mainstream medicine says that improvement isn't possible.

Today's win worth celebrating: a message I received from a client today.

"For the first time in years my migraine went away without any medication! I used my tools and trusted it would be temporary. This gives me hope that I can continue to gain control and one day freedom from migraines!"

A great reminder that when it comes to recovering from chronic symptoms such as migraines, it happens through many successive small steps. The real solution isn't a quick fix and quick fixes often trap us in more intense and persistent symptoms in the long run.
