My body HURTS.
Years and years of lifting weights, not stretching, and beating it down has left me hurting physically.
Listen, I’m the first to tell you to workout, to lift weights, to use it to help with energy, mood and overall strength, but something my Dad taught me is that “an overdone strength can become a weakness.”
Yay, I’ve “overdone” my strength and my body is speaking to me loud and clear and it’s NOT HAPPY.
So a few months ago, when the thought of going to the gym made me want to vomit, and my tennis elbow was so painful it hurt to pick up my coffee, I decided to switch gears.
I traded in my time at the gym, grunting and lifting heavyweights for long walks in nature with my dogs, meditation and even yoga. 😳
My fascia system is bound so tight that even touching my toes is difficult and I knew it was time to stop trying to build more muscle and tear my body down but to instead love it gently.
Yoga is hard for me.
I understand why it’s so important (body and mind) but I don’t like things I’m not instantly good at, and I am not (yet) good at yoga. So, I committed to at least 3 days a week and the grace to go down into child’s pose any time the moves were too advanced or I was feeling overwhelmed. I committed to not caring about anyone’s practice but my own and thinking long-term about my health, my mobility and my mental strength.
It’s been so good for me and while I’m still bound tight, and I won’t be showing off my pigeon to any of you anytime soon, I’m getting satisfaction from my practice more by the day. I can now touch my toes (progress!) and I’m feeling a lot of inner peace and space.
This morning I returned to the gym, but not to hit it hard, but to lift simply and mindfully. After my efficient workout (30 minutes) I headed straight to yoga for the chance to unwind and take care of my body at a deeper level.
What served me at 38 doesn’t serve me at 48 and being willing to embrace change is one of life’s hardest challenges.
We evolve and grow, and if we listen, the body, mind and spirit are always telling us where to go next.
Tune in, create space and listen.
Are you using your felt sense today (your bodies physical messages) to move your life in the right direction?
