The Yule Log.

c/o - earthhwitchery.com

"The Yule Log, an ancient symbol of the season, came to us from the Celts. The log, a ph***ic symbol, is usually cut from an Oak tree, symbolic of the god. The entire log was decorated with holly, mistletoe, and evergreens to represent the intertwining of the god and goddess who are reunited on this sabbat. The log was burned in the hearth or fireplace. Modern pagans also have the option of using pieces of oak small enough to be burned in the cauldron.
In modern times, another tradition has emerged since not everyone has fireplaces. Three holes are bored in the top of the log for three candles, representing the goddess in her three aspects -- maiden, mother, and crone. Normally these candles are white, red, and black in honor of this triple aspect. This log may be reused year after year, with the candles changed each year.

An ancient rhyme of unknown origin reflects the importance of the Yule Log on this sabbat:
May the log burn,
May the wheel turn,
May evil spurn,
May the Sun return.

The ashes of the yule log or spent wax from candles are tied up in a cloth for the entire year as a charm for protection, fertility, strength, and health."

The full moon December 22, 2018, falls at 0º Cancer 2018. This full moon December 2018 astrology is extremely powerful and fortunate. Those touched by this full Moon will do well in any role where they play parent or carer at this festive time. Indeed the nurturing energy is so strong at this time that it could feed an army. The great thing about this position is that the Moon will never exceed what it is willing to give. At this time we learn very quickly that we are no good to anyone if we burn themselves out. This also means that there is none of the martyr syndrome resentment vibe that happens sometimes with overly lunar energy.

This position is very fertile, it has the feel of that spongy turf that grows around a lake and the water lilies that sit upon it. We are drawn to healing mud that this full Moon December has in abundance. Moon in Cancer 1 inspires fantastic cooks and serves health therapists, especially those in the realms of nutrition or massage. The ambience at this full Moon is gentile and compromising. Those touched by this full Moon will want to treat their loved ones like royalty. It’s a great period to do things that pamper yourself or indulge in home-made treats.

Full Moon December 2018 Star Betelgeuse 29º Gemini “Active mind, strong will, turbulent, rebellious under restraint, military success but suffering through quarrels with superiors, likelihood of great power, honour and wealth.” With Moon, (As lunar mansion) here “a birth native will be insincere, proud, ungrateful, cruel, sinful, deceitful and wicked.” “The use of power to improve the quality of life of the common people. Concern for one’s immediate environment and domain. In extreme cases, members of one’s tribe are sacrificed to ensure the continued dominance of one’s genetic family. Survival of the fittest.”

Betelgeuse is the famous bright red star in the shoulder of Orion. Technically this star belongs in Gemini decan 3, but it is close enough to this full Moon to make an impact. Orion is probably one of the easiest constellations to recognise in the sky with three stars in a row for Orion’s belt and the sapphire blue Rigel at his foot. This collection has fascinated sky watchers for millennia. For the Egyptians, Orion was Osiris, the greatest god of them all. The Greeks, however, rather down-graded him to the arrogant stalker of his huntress counterpart Artemis.

Legend has it that the virgin goddess of the hunt grew annoyed at Orion’s constant boasting (That he could hunt down and dominate any animal on earth) so decided to bring him down a peg or two. She sent a scorpion to sting his foot, which made him blind. The fixed star Betelgeuse itself seems to have escaped most of the ill fortune suggested the mythology of the actual constellation, but as you will see in the research, sometimes Artemis’s punishment and the resulting rejection bleed through.

The 1st Face Of Cancer ~ “A man whose fingers and head are distorted and slanted, and his body is similar to a horse’s body; his feet are white, and he has fig leaves on his body. This is a face of instruction, love, subtlety and mastery” ~ Picatrix

Betelgeuse is quite volatile but shows Orion has the ability to resurrect itself after a fall. Betelgeuse is found in the striking arm of the hunter, where he holds a huge ph***ic club and you wouldn’t want to argue with that! At a 0.5 magnitude, this star is giant, red and aggressive. But even if it seems rather brutish, Bernadette Brady still regards Betelgeuse as a very fortunate in her commentaries, saying it generally gives worldly power, great strength and success.

Other commentators below, who use the longitude method fixed star system, give Betelgeuse more of a military emphasis and in doing so add violent and explosive tendencies. “War and carnage are presaged by Betelgeuse. The star is indicative of great fortune, martial honors and “kingly” attributes. Variable moods and the mind always anxious with the immediate problems of the day.” Betelgeuse’s Lunar mansion is ruled by the storm god Rudra and is a “ Sharp asterism belonging to the butcher caste and favourable for punishment, torture, imprisonment, exorcism, mesmerism and separation or union when containing the Moon.” The Moon was on Betelgeuse when the 1st tower was struck on 9/11 so we can see the explosive trait very clearly there.

Full Moon December Aspect ~ Sextile Uranus

Moon sextile Uranus brings an abundance of radical and innovative energy through an individual into the public eye. These are the worlds self-assured rebels who don’t give a fig about conforming to the status quo. The soft aspects brings to fruition personal freedom, revolution and electric genius that has been refined over many lifetimes. The more outlandish the subject behaves, the more the public seems to lap it up. The sextile is supposedly harmonious energy, but we still get some challenge with this aspect. Having such strong courage of one’s convictions will often provoke criticism, fear and even envy from the conformists. Often this aspect’s critics are the very people who would love to lead a more honest lifestyle but are far too constrained by the fear of being rejected by their fashion-conscious peers.

Everything about this full moon is beautiful and its nurturing energy is just perfect for the Christmas season. It is also just fabulous for all festive indulgence and home-cooking that goes on at this time of year. But watch out for the scape goating of Betelgeuse as Brady has said that “In extreme cases, members of one’s tribe are sacrificed to ensure the continued dominance of one’s genetic family.”

In our personal lives, we can see that the scape goating tendency could flare up after one too many glasses of Christmas spirit. Grumpy relatives who haven’t seen each other for a year could use this time to vent their spleen. The good thing is though these grumps really won’t be able to ruin anything as the vibes are far too loving generally. Any grandiose super-narcissistic behaviour could have Gaia unleash her Scorpio sting and the offending guest may well be sent limping home as the universe dishes out its divine punishment.

That leaves the rest of the family to enjoy the fuzzy, warm love that can now flourish once the toxic drama-king or queen has been removed. Betelgeuse is the archetype of the divine masculine however and the positive side could be Papa Santa Claus bringing joy himself. A wise old grandad calms things down, uniting the family against jealousy and disruption. Yes, there is the chance of explosions, but hopefully, they will be nothing more than champagne corks popping or fireworks at New Year.

Generally, this is very cosy full Moon and best enjoyed in the bosom of the family. However, if your biological family do happen to be nothing but a bunch of narcissists then don’t waste your time making a purse out of a sow’s ear, seek out your spiritual family instead. Genuine love is embraced with open arms as seen in the heart-warming two of cups card.

Happy Yule!

Happy Solstice.

Happy Solstice.

Solstice meditation

On the morning of the Solstice bundle up and take some Chai or cinnamon tea in a travel mug to a prime sunrise viewing location. Settle in, breathe deeply, relax, and feel the unique magic of the Solstice, when the light is reborn. When the sun peeks over the horizon, toast the sun with words such as these:

“Sunshine of my soul, radiant and beloved star, I salute you. I welcome you. I thank you.”
Feel gratitude for the warmth, beauty, sustenance, and joy the sun brings. Feel and imagine the sunlight flooding your soul and your every cell. As you drink the warming tea, internalize the expansive and life-affirming energy of the sun.

(If you cannot do this outside, if you prefer you can do this indoors instead while looking out the window towards the sunrise.)
