The new year brings the bicentennial of the birth of
Johann Mendel, the father of genetics, who was born July 22, 1822 and died as Abbot Gregor Mendel on January 6, 1884. His genetic discovery was unappreciated during his own time (but other scientific work was well respected); 35 years after his death his contributions were widely recognized and the perception of him moved beyond that of a solitary monk who bred pea plants.

To foster greater awareness of Mendel's contributions to genetics, many in the medical genetics community will celebrate his 200th birthday. Various activities over the next year will emphasize Mendel's lessons for today.
