Circle City Play Therapy

Circle City Play Therapy Hi there! I am so glad you are here. My name is Lindsay Gayle and I own Circle City Counseling. I hope to provide that here.

I adore my work with kids and families, but I felt called to both make a bigger impact and share my knowledge and experience in hopes of helping more families. I have worked with ages 3 up through college and also adults in a parenting capacity. I am a licensed mental health clinician and a registered play therapist. I hope that something in my information is helpful to you. I plan to expand my means of digital content as well, so please keep checking back for more!

*Follow up post*

Recently I shared about my 8yo walking himself to a neighborhood kiddos birthday party. Today I am following up on the safety conversation I have had with him prior to him embarking on going to others houses on his own.

Considerations:
👦Age of the child and their maturity
✨My own personal experiences (to possibly offer an example)
👍🏻 Keep it short and sweet and allow for questions

So, I shared his right to ask for what he needs (drink, bathroom, etc). I shared his right to feel comfortable and explained what discomfort might feel like: thinking something is confusing or strange, stomach upset, struggling to feel calm or enjoy his time. (A personal example was a friend convinced me to jump on her parents bed and we were equally yelled at and punished). I reviewed body safety and autonomy. And lastly, I reviewed an out - if he doesn’t feel safe or comfortable, tell an adult he doesn’t feel good (this is not a lie!) and wants to go home.

This can be a test drive situation with follow up considerations too!

How do you handle these conversations?

This is my 8yo walking himself to a neighbor kids birthday party. It certainly gave me all the feels. How did I arrive at the decision that he was ready (knowing that I was maybe not!).

Context: we are privileged to live in a largely safe neighborhood. He has been to this friend’s house several times. I’ve had the safety conversations both with him and the other parents.

Would you be interested in a further breakdown of those conversations?

Happy Play Therapy Week! Sometimes in play therapy we play games - yes, PLAY GAMES🤯🥰. This is the language of children. Games help with engagement, frustration tolerance, following directions, a physical and/or kinesthetic activity to allow for easier verbal sharing, and more. And while we sometimes play “regular” games, we have a special love for cooperative games where it’s a team effort. This is one of our newer faves!!

Do you play games with your kiddo?
