💫Radiation Therapist: Shira Hageman💫

In our final spotlight this NRTW week we talk with Shira, RT (T)

Shira's Journey: "My first insight to Radiation Oncology was when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was a senior in high school. As my mother underwent treatment, I began to see the role that radiation therapists played in her care. In the midst of the chaos, they were a steady presence. This experience sparked something in me.
After completing my degree, I began working at UIHC as a radiation therapist. My role includes setting up patients for treatment every day, administering the radiation treatment, and providing support and care to patients and their families. A unique aspect of radiation therapy is getting to form relationships with patients as they typically receive treatment for multiple weeks."

"My advice to students would be to stay compassionate and patient centered. Radiation therapy isn't just about machines and technology—it's about people."

"Don’t underestimate the power of a comforting word or a gentle touch. Remember, you're not just treating a disease, you're supporting a person and their loved ones through one of the toughest times in their life. Don't be afraid to ask questions, keep learning and growing and take care of yourself."

✨RT student: Kyla Ailes✨

Kyla is in the Radiation Sciences, Radiologic Technology 2 year track

Why Iowa?
"I chose the University of Iowa because of its prestigious hospital systems and the accessibility for students interested in healthcare careers. The Rad Sci educators are very invested in our success and want to see us excel."

Advice for students:
"Take every opportunity to learn about the different modalities and ask as many questions as you can so that you're able to choose a career tailored to your interests. Try to get comfortable around all kinds of patients and immerse yourself in different clinical settings. This is an excellent career to explore, with many opportunities for growth during and after completing the X-ray program!"

Thank you, Kyla!

📣Meet Justine Young RT (R)📣

Justine started working in the UI Healthcare ortho clinics 4 years ago and she wouldn’t change it.
"The fast pace, high volume work flow is what makes the days fun. I truly love being able to work with all the MA’s, nurses, athletic trainers, and doctors daily. Being able to see patients before and after surgery is pretty amazing."

Advice: "Take the time to explore all the areas radiology has to offer."

Thank you for your dedication to your patients and the RT students!
Happy NRTW!

⭐Meet Therapy senior, Reese Heap⭐

What advice do you have for students interested in Radiation Therapy?

"Communication is so important in this field, especially since we see our patients every day and they’re often going through really tough times. It’s such a rewarding career! It’s important to stay professional but still build real connections with both patients and staff—and never be afraid to ask questions!"

Why did you choose the University of Iowa?

"What really drew me to this program is the strong focus on clinical experience and how well it prepares students for boards and post-graduation. I also love that we get to work in both hospital settings and smaller clinics—it offers such a great mix of learning environments."

Thank you, Reese!

📣Staff spotlight: Jodie Miller RT(R)📣

To celebrate NRTW we will be highlighting UI RT & RTT staff and students.

First up, Jodie Miller, Senior Imaging Technologist at University of Iowa Health Care - Downtown Campus.

Advice for students interested in Radiology:
"I highly recommend job shadowing in multiple modalities to see what area of Radiology speaks to you/them. Don't be afraid to ask questions during your job shadows as each technologist has a different story and background to tell. If you are interested in any specific modality, don't be afraid to pursue it early in your career. If you choose Radiology for your career, challenge yourself and be open to learning new things. Radiology is a growing field with many new and exciting options to choose from. "

Thank you, Jodie! Happy RadTech Week!

⭐Meet DMS alum, Heather Maas⭐

UI DMS class of 1999

Heather is registered in Abdomen, OB/Gyn, Vascular, Neuro and Echo. She worked at the University of Iowa, Radiology US dept and then Grinnell Regional Medical Center. After several years, Heather decided to go back to the University of Iowa to gain her education in Echocardiography.
Currently, she works as a Clinical Solutions Consultant aka an Application’s Specialist for Philips Healthcare Ultrasound.
Why did Heather choose the University of Iowa?
"I chose the University of Iowa for its prestigious reputation in sonography education. It’s the best program in the state. The educators I had (Stephanie, Todd and Deb) were top notch and I learned so much from all of them, not only didactically but clinically, as well. I still use some of their suggestions while I am teaching staff myself."

What advice do you have for students interested in sonography?
"Work hard and put your best effort into getting great images. Don’t rush just to get the exam done. Talk with your patients, find out why there are there to see you that day. That can help you and the radiologist come up with a diagnosis. There is nothing better than helping a person figure out why they aren’t feeling well. Sonographers are the first link in the diagnosis chain and that’s pretty cool."
