SIBO Detection by Hydrogen & Methane Breath Test Contact us to order hydrogen breath tests for patients.

Center for SIBO Testing, based out of Issaquah Washington, provides at home SIBO test kits to practitioners and physicians around the Seattle area. We also provide at home SIBO tests directly to patients. We offer tests to providers locally to the Bellevue, Everett, Sammamish, Redmond, Bothell, Tacoma and Kirkland. We also work with providers and patients regionally across Washington, and nationally.

SIBO kits are back! We’ve been working closely with Quintron Instrument Company over the last few months to ensure that we have an ample supply of SIBO test kits on hand to provide those to your patients quickly and whenever needed. We expect to have plenty of kits available in 2023, and we’re back to the usual 24-hour turnaround time for test kit shipment.

As always, sample analysis continues to operate on a same-day turnaround time with reports delivered to the ordering provider within 12 hours of sample receipt.

Thank you for you patience and understanding over the last couple of months as we’ve overcome this supply chain shortage.

The signs and symptoms of SIBO are caused by bacterial fermentation of carbohydrates within the small intestine and resulting damage to the small intestine caused by the bacteria. As bacteria ferment (AKA eat) carbohydrates, they produce gases (hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide), which leads to GI symptoms - gas, bloating, abdominal pain, heartburn, changes in bowel patterns. The bacteria also cause damage within the small intestine. Bacteria increase inflammatory cytokines and can digest the intestinal brush border by the enzymes that they produce. This damage to the brush border perpetuates increased intestinal permeability and carbohydrate malabsorption. Bacteria can also de-conjugate bile within the small intestine, causing fat malabsorption.

To treat this vicious cycle, the bacteria must be eliminated from the small intestine. However, additional therapies can be added to the treatment plan after SIBO eradication to promote gut healing. Naturopathic medicine thrives in this area. Powerhouse gut healers include colostrum, immunoglobulins, L-glutamine, zinc carnosine, and vitamins A and D. Mucilaginous and vulnerary herbs, such as marshmallow, aloe, and slippery elm, may also be used, but caution is advised for use during active SIBO, as these herbs are rich in carbohydrates that can fuel bacteria, and exacerbate SIBO symptoms.

Did you know that an estimated 60% of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) cases are caused by underlying SIBO? Many people are given a lifetime diagnosis of IBS without hopes of symptom resolution, but this means that 60% of IBS has a cure if SIBO is present!

Common gastrointestinal symptoms that may indicate SIBO include:

Abdominal bloating, usually better in the morning and worse as the day progresses
Abdominal pain
Constipation and/or diarrhea
Acid reflux
Food sensitivities
GI symptoms develop after acute gastroenteritis (i.e. “stomach flu”, food poisoning, traveler’s diarrhea)
Worsened GI symptoms when eating carbohydrates, high fiber foods, onions, garlic, and apples

If you have been diagnosed with IBS without an explanation as to why you’re having symptoms, or experience any of the symptoms listed above on a regular basis, consider talking to a doctor about ordering a SIBO breath test.

As of February 2020, it has been proposed by the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) that methane-SIBO is its own condition and requires its own nomenclature.

Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth (IMO) has been proposed as the name for the condition designated by elevated methane gas levels measured by glucose/lactulose breath tests. IMO is suggested to be more appropriate than “SIBO” or “methane-SIBO” for the following reasons:

1. Methane gas is produced in humans by archaea (predominantly Methanobrevibacter smithii). Because bacteria are not responsible for the production of methane, IMO is a better classification than “bacterial” overgrowth.

2. It is suspected that methanogen overgrowth in both the small and large intestines will result in disease and positive breath tests. Therefore, using the terminology IMO may be more accurate than “small intestinal” overgrowth to describe this condition.

for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. This guideline provides an evidence-based evaluation of the literature through the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) process. In instances where the available evidence was not appropriate for a formal GRADE recommend...

All operations are back to normal, and we’ve resumed drop shipping and fulfillment of clinic inventory requests. Thank you all for your patience and for your business.

04/02/2020

During the COVID-19 outbreak, we remain open to support both our partner providers and their patients. However, due to the temporary closure of our testing kit manufacturer, Quintron Instrument Company, we will be unable to fulfill drop shipment requests and clinic inventory orders. We will, however, continue daily analysis of patients samples with little to no impact on same-day data reporting. We are also here for your patients to support their testing and test preparation needs. We anticipate that fulfillment of drop shipment and clinic inventory requests will resume in mid-to-late April. We appreciate your patience during this challenging time.

Did you know that SIBO is now one of the top things we test for now when our patients are dealing with Chronic Fatigue, migraines, depression, anxiety and chronic pain? Many patients don't even exhibit symptoms of digestive imbalance, yet once we find and treat SIBO these peripheral, seemingly non-gut related symptoms go away. The moral of the story is that the gut is the center of your universe. Look there first when things are complicated and symptoms seem un-related.
