The Ithaca Doula Collective is excited to have a table at this event. There will be a wonderful group of women there, offering up their particular skills and products. Join us!

The event is free, but it would be wise to bring some money in case you see anything that calls to you. And with the variety of tables, there’s a good chance you will. See you there!

The Ithaca Doula Collective is proud to announce its new book club!

This book club will feature a new book about pregnancy, birth, or the postpartum period every month. It will be led by doulas who are excited to share their unique perspective to help YOU prepare for your journey into and through parenthood.

In January, we’ll be discussing Penny Simkin’s “The Birth Partner” (6th edition). For the first meeting on January 8th we’ll be discussing chapters 1 through 4.

You don’t need to be working with a doula to join us! PM the page or comment “Book Club” to get the link to the virtual meeting room.

We can’t wait to see you there!

Our nutrition post this month focuses on Gestational Diabetes, a diagnosis that affects 3-8% of pregnant women. That works out to 135,000 women a year. Following a low carb diet can be a great way to manage the diagnosis in a delicious way.

Our Collective is growing, so we thought it might be time to highlight one of our doulas! This “featured doula” moment is where we ask our doulas as a series of questions to help you get to know them better. This week we chatted with Victoria Benson, a birth and postpartum doula:

* When you’re not doing birthwork, where might we find you?

“When not at a birth, I can be found on my over crowded sofa watching movies or at our kitchen table playing board games with my family.”

* What’s a go-to or surprising item in your birth bag?

“I’ve shocked many people by pull out my telescoping stool out of my doula bag. So handy as a foot rest for lunges or make a spot to sit!”

* Anything on the menu at Gimme Coffee is up for grabs. What are you ordering?

“I’ll have a hot chai with whole milk, please!”

* What’s your favorite self-care practice?

“Self care needs to provide rest and restore energy. I find I have to balance between rest and interaction in my self-care. While I do enjoy vegging out rewatching old shows, I do also benefit from having friends over or going for a walk by the lake.“

A good broth is an ancient and delicious medicine. Perfect for when mama and baby are getting to know each other and healing. One of our doulas, Calina Mayo, has been making broth for years, and would like to share why you should too!

There are many considerations when it comes to where you decide to give birth, including who you want supporting you, what interventions or treatments you want access to, and insurance coverage/out of pocket cost.

The 3 main options are:
Hospital
Birth Center
Home

One thing to note about working with home birth midwives or midwives at a birth center is that you may risk out of their care based on your health or the baby’s health during your pregnancy. You would then be referred to an OBGYN who delivers at a hospital. It is also possible that you may transfer your care from a home or birth center based midwife to a hospital based provider in the midst of your labor if the need arises (changes in your health, changes in baby’s health, or the need/desire for pharmaceutical intervention and higher level care).

It’s important to feel comfortable and safe with both your provider and the location you plan to give birth. Only you know what’s best for you and your family. Working with a doula can help you to navigate your options regardless of where you give birth, especially when plans change unexpectedly!
