Workout classes can be intimidating. The fear of judgement, fear of looking like you don’t know what you are doing, fear of it being so hard you pass out… I get it. I totally get it.

As a fitness instructor, I am sad to say that fat phobia exists in fitness classes. Whether it’s outright, like comments on how working out helps you lose weight, ‘burn calories’, or ‘work off our weekend’….. or more subtle, like not having proper equipment or not offering modifications to movements for different abilities.

I know this to be true: Movement should be for every body.

I started teaching barre in 2020. It’s always been one of my favorite forms of movement because it helps connect me to my body, makes me stronger, and has kept me from injury (seriously.)

None of those things have to do with weight.

I strive to teach my classes with all bodies in mind. Do I fail at this? Yes. Do I keep trying. Absolutely.

If you are in the Jackson area and you are hoping to find a class that is non-judgmental, I highly suggest you try . DM me for details about my classes and supporting you in finding whatever movement makes your heart sing.

Skinny does not equal healthy.

Fat does not equal unhealthy.

Thinness is glorified and thus used in marketing to get you to buy things that the Wellness Industry has decided you should buy.

They use thin people to sell health because we continue to think that thinness = health.

IT DON'T, MY FRIENDS.

You cannot determine someone's health by the way they look.

Health does not have a look or a size.

Strive for your own version of health - whatever that looks like. If you need support, reach out and we will find it for you.

Emotional Eating is not one thing we 'do' to cope with scary feelings - it's actually a spectrum.

Emotional Eating is part of the human experience. It isn't bad - it just 'is'. It also isn't always done in a vacuum. Sometimes you are emotionally eating AND eating for hunger.

The spectrum of emotional eating goes from Sensory Gratification to Punishment.

Sensory Gratification is the simple act of a food tasting really, really good and your brain going 'Dang, I feel good right now".

Comfort is eating to feel more soothed. This could be eating mac n' cheese or soup on a really chilly day or feeling sick and wanting chicken soup.

Distraction is eating to no longer feel an intense emotion. Temporary distractions aren't always harmful - sometimes you need to come back to an emotion to really be able to deal with it.

Sedation is using food to numb yourself or repeatedly not feel emotions deemed too scary. This is when emotional eating can start to be complicating.

Punishment is the extreme of emotional eating. It's using food to 'punish' yourself for being or feeling specific things. For example, you may feel you are are a bad person and painfully eat because you 'deserve pain'.

As humans, we all fall on this spectrum. Realizing emotional eating is a human experience can remove the guilt around some of our emotional food choices. Sometimes it's great to eat soup on a cold day.

What we want to avoid is having food be the ONLY tool we use to cope with emotions.

Let's cultivate some new tools. For me, I walk or call my mom. I do dance parties in my living room. I journal.

What other tools have you gained to deal with emotions? Drop them below.

Does this sound like your experience?

You start to work on hunger levels but the anxiety around this unchartered territory is extreme.

You don't feel the sensation of hunger when it's time to eat because your anxiety is too high.

You avoid eating food because you are 'not hungry' and you shouldn't eat when you are 'not hungry'.

Sound familiar?

Lack of food can increase anxiety and anxiety can decrease your sensation of hunger.

Notice I say the SENSATION of hunger decreases because your actual hunger is still present.

Your body is still in need of calories, it's your mind that tells your body to reduce the 'hunger alarm' because it thinks it needs to be ready to deal with something bigger and scarier.

The thing is - lack of food will make you more anxious. Low blood sugar can increase anxiety. The less you eat, the more anxious you are. The more anxious you are, the harder it is to feel your body's hunger and fullness signals.

How to fix it? Eat regularly. If you are having trouble feeling hunger - eat every 3-4 hours. Reset your hunger signals by telling your mind,

"Don't worry about not getting enough - I got you."

Also - THERAPY. get some. It's amazing.

We all have bad body image days - even those of us who have been practicing Intuitive Eating and working on body acceptance for a long time.

Many of my clients ask me when these days will stop. And frankly, they don’t. They do, however, DRASTICALLY reduce in frequency. They also become much more manageable, because you have taught yourself that your worth is not defined by your appearance.

When you get hit with a “Bad Body Image Day”, ask yourself these questions:

1. Am I wearing clothes that fit my here-and-now body?

If your clothes are too tight and uncomfortable, OF COURSE you are going to feel uncomfortable in your body! Your body deserves to be clothed in things that make you FEEL good.

2. Did I see/hear something on Social Media that has contributed to this feeling?

Nothing makes us feel self-conscious faster than seeing a thin influencer living the life we want. Remember: Social Media is a highlight real. We can appreciate beauty without questioning our own. Delete people who make you feel bad!

3. Are there other stressful events happening in my life right now?

If we are used to picking ourselves apart - that scenario may feel like home. When we get stressed and anxious, we put ourselves in places that feel comfortable. Recognize that the stress you are putting on your body - may be more about other things.

4. What do I like about my body that isn’t appearance based?

Bodies do INCREDIBLE things! My thick thighs get me up mountains. My lungs help me breath, my mouth helps me sing. What does yours do for you?

I found food relationship work spontaneously. I got out of a tough relationship, moved back across the country from Maine and stayed with my brother in Jackson Hole, WY for a 3 month summer.

It 100% saved my life.

At that moment I was thrust into a community that not only didn't micromanage their food intake, move their bodies only to craft how they look, or talk about dieting all the time.

I had family meals and biked to each others houses. I cooked together with ingredients from all food groups without measuring cups or scales or points. I laughed and hiked and enjoyed my life without feeling like I needed to be someone I wasn't.

That was the spark. The food relationship fire started in in my Dietetic Internship, where we first learned about intuitive eating while simultaneously being dropped into Diet Culture in every rotation we had.

I knew the only place I belonged in the field of dietetics is within food relationship and eating disorder work.

Because I have felt the shackles being broken from a life built on control and fear.

Break them off dude. Seriously. There is SO MUCH JOY out in the world and it doesn't come by trying to force your body to be something it doesn't want to be.

Have you ever overheard a conversation about dieting and someone says 'You have so much willpower!'

A warning light should go off in your head.

There are many disordered eating behaviors that are normalized as 'healthy'. These four are very common.

What disordered eating behaviors do you know that are normalized?

Let's debunk them in the comments below.

Did anyone else just pick a random weight growing up as a goal weight? I remember reading when I was 14 that Britney Spears was 120 lbs, looked at Britney Spears' body with envious eyes, and thought 120 lbs is the weight I must be at all times. Relatable?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Weight is an arbitrary number that changes for a multitude of reasons .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is one of the many reasons why I will not ask you to weigh yourself. This number really doesn't give me much information, unless you need to be medicated while hospitalized, are pregnant, or are trying to gain weight during ED recovery. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Weight doesn't define your worth, your beauty, your health... it defines nothing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We get to choose what defines us. I am a positive person. I am a good sister, good partner, good daughter. I am a runner. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My value exists whether Diet Culture agrees or not.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What do you define yourself as?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I spent years of my life not fulling enjoying life. Not fully embracing myself or my body…. Trying to make myself look at feel different.

When your mind is so preoccupied with counting calories, looking at fat grams, measuring all of your food… you don’t have the mental capacity for anything else. You can’t enjoy anything completely, because you can’t offer yourself completely.

Life should be savored. It should be enjoyed to the fullest. Your meals should be delicious and comforting and spark joy. Your friendships and relationships should bring you peace and contentment. Your body should be praised completely exactly how it is.

I chose Savor because I don’t want you to walk around this planet how I used to - only partially there.

Savor your food. Savor your friendships. Savor your Life.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you feel controlled by food, stuck in an endless cycle of dieting, or struggling with disordered eating - it's time to look at your relationship with food. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can find health by getting out of your head and into your body. Self-care, movement, gentle nutrition - these don’t need to center around weight loss. Improve your relationship with food and your body without the guilt and shame that dieting can cause.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every inch of you is pure magic. Through our work together, you will unpack the negative thoughts and shame around food, listen to your body’s innate signals, and learn to nourish and love the body you have now, so you can be the healthiest version of yourself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

REINTRODUCTION TIME:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hi there! I'm Hannah Tripp, Registered Dietitian and anti-diet enthusiast. I work with people who want to improve their relationship with food. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The goals with food relationship work: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Have a life you freakin' love. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Feed and move your body in ways that make you feel good. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Ditch the guilt around food.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. Stop the yo-yo dieting cycle.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. Move towards YOUR version of health.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My passion as a dietitian is to get people to stop feeling deprived, guilting, frustrated, and constantly thinking about food. I want you to establish all the pillars of your life that encompass health and help you climb them.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now, one of the biggest misconceptions about this work is that it neglects or ignores nutrition. Not at all! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We know that food has an huge impact on our health, but so do other aspects of our life like stress, body image, food access, systemic racism, sexism, and ableism (to name very few..). In order to see health with fresh, non-dieting eyes, you need to do the internal work first. So we put weight loss on the back burner and focus on setting our minds up for success. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
About Me: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I love cooking. I love eating. I love running. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I used to diet ALOT.... Weight Watchers, Low-Carb, Calorie Counting, extreme restriction.. I dropped to dangerously low in weight and I STILL wasn't happy.. because it's not about weight. I get the struggle and I am here to show you there is 100% another way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Nice to meet you.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hey weight loss apps - I am talking to you. 1200 calories is the caloric needs of a toddler. YOU NEED MORE FOOD.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Calories are energy. If you are trying to drive across your state and you need a fuel tank of gas to get there, but you only fill up your tank to half-full.... are you going to make it?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Nope. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Same with your body my friends. If you do not give yourself enough ENERGY to function, your body will not function properly. That means thinking less clearly, more irritable, extra tired, and a plain 'ol as***le to be around. Decreased caloric intake can also lead to binging later- your body is going to get what it wants one way or another .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Stop letting other people tell you how much you should eat. Your body has built in systems to do that for you.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
