Memory Impairment and Neurodegenerative Dementia (MIND) Center A biomedical research center investigating Alzheimer's disease at the University of Mississippi Medic

The MIND Center is a group of investigators from different disciplines working together to illuminate the causes of Alzheimer's and related neurodegenerative dementias through cutting-edge research. In 2010 the MIND Center was tapped to head a new $26 million study comprised of some of the world's leading medical research institutions to look at mid-life risk factors for dementia. The new study, called the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Neurocognitive Study, will examine more than 20 years of test results taken at regular intervals on 16,000 study participants and include a new round of testing. With that unique window into the past, research hope to further understand the early factors that lead to Alzheimer's. The MIND Center brings together some of the largest neuro-epidemiological studies ever conducted, state-of-the-art brain imaging and powerful new genetic technologies to accelerate the pace of discovery.

šŸ•°ļøšŸ’œ Daylight Saving Time Ends Today — But for Those with Alzheimer’s, Time Can Feel Different Every Day.
As we ā€œfall backā€ and gain an extra hour, it’s a good reminder that changes in routine and daylight can deeply affect individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease.

šŸ’” Tip for caregivers: Gradually adjust routines and lighting in the days leading up to the time change to help ease transitions.

šŸŽƒ Halloween & Alzheimer’s: Creating Safe, Joyful Moments
Halloween can be a fun and festive time—but for individuals living with Alzheimer’s or dementia, it may also bring confusion or anxiety.

At The MIND Center, we encourage caregivers to celebrate in ways that feel safe and comforting:

šŸ‘» Choose friendly, familiar costumes and decorations
šŸ•Æļø Avoid loud noises or flashing lights
šŸ¬ Keep routines consistent

šŸ§ šŸƒā€ā™€ļø Did You Know?
Exercise may help protect your brain from Alzheimer’s disease.

According to research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), regular physical activity can:

āœ… Lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s
āœ… Improve cognitive function
āœ… Slow cognitive decline in those already diagnosed

In a recent study, scientists found that exercise in mice with Alzheimer’s disease restored gene activity in brain cells, boosted the formation of new neurons, and improved memory performance. These changes were especially noticeable in the hippocampus — the brain’s memory center.

šŸ’”This research suggests that staying active isn’t just good for your body — it’s also a powerful way to support brain health!
