Happy Down Syndrome Awareness Month!!

Did you know the following about Down syndrome?

1. Down syndrome (Ds) occurs when someone is born with an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. Most individuals with Ds have 47 chromosomes, instead of 46 chromosomes. There is no known cause of Down syndrome.

2. Down Syndrome is the most common chromosomal condtion occurring in about 1 in every 700 births.

3. There are some common physical traits that individuals with Ds share. A few of these could be flatter facial profile, smaller stature, slanted eyes and low muscle tone. However, individuals with Down syndrome don’t all look alike. They typically resemble their own family members.

4. There are 3 types of Down syndrome. Trisomy 21 is the most common and is when every cell in the body has an extra copy of the 21st chromsome (3 instead of 2). Mosaicism is when only some of the cells have an extra copy. Translocation is when a part of that extra 21st chromosome attaches to a different chromosome.

5. Down syndrome is named after the last name of the physician who first described the common characteristics- John Langdon Down.

6. About 50% of babies with Down syndrome are born with a congenital heart defect. Some of those require surgery to repair.

7. Advances in medical care have significantly increased the life expectancy for an individual with Down syndrome. The average life expectancy for a person with Ds is now 60 and climbing.

8. Individuals with Down syndrome are each unique and that extra chromosome affects each individual differently. There is a wide variety in abilities and talents for people with Ds.

9. Studies show that families of children with Down syndrome often report higher levels of happiness and fulfillment. Siblings of children with Ds reported developing a deeper sense of responsibility, compassion, and an ability to appreciate diversity.

10. Early intervention with therapies can significantly improve development of children with Down syndrome.
