❄️ Winter Illness Prevention ❄️

Cold weather often brings an increase in flu, RSV, and COVID-19 cases. Taking a few simple steps can help protect you and those around you:

😷💉 🤧
Wash hands often with soap and water
Cover coughs and sneezes and stay home if you’re sick
Stay up to date on vaccines for flu and COVID-19
Clean high-touch surfaces regularly
Avoid close contact with others when symptoms start

🚨 When to seek care:
• Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
• Persistent high fever
• Chest pain or pressure
• Signs of dehydration
• Symptoms that are worsening or not improving
• Infants, older adults, or those with chronic conditions should seek care sooner

If you’re unsure where to go, our care team can help guide you to the right level of care.

Stay informed. Stay prepared. Stay healthy this winter.

New Year, Healthy You 🌿

This January, focus on progress. Not perfection.

✔️ Keep a water bottle nearby to stay hydrated
✔️ Add movement where you can (park farther away, take the stairs, stretch during TV time)
✔️ Make your health a priority by scheduling routine care or preventive visits

Healthy habits don’t have to be overwhelming. Start with what feels manageable and give yourself grace along the way.

🔥 Cold Weather Safety: Space Heater Awareness 🔥

While South Alabama doesn’t often see extreme winter temperatures, colder days still lead many households to use space heaters and improper use can quickly become dangerous.

🚨 Space heater safety tips:
• Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn (curtains, bedding, furniture)
• Never leave heaters unattended or running while sleeping
• Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet. Avoid extension cords or power strips
• Place heaters on a flat, stable surface
• Turn heaters off when leaving the room
• Keep heaters out of reach of children and pets

🏠 Even short periods of cold weather can increase the risk of house fires when space heaters are misused.

Taking a few extra precautions can help keep your family safe and warm this winter.

January is National Blood Donor Month

Each January, we recognize the lifesaving impact of blood donors and the critical role they play in patient care. Winter months often bring a drop in blood donations due to weather, illness, and busy schedules yet the need for blood never slows down.

Every donation can help trauma patients, surgery patients, cancer patients, mothers during childbirth, and those with chronic illnesses. Just one donation has the potential to save multiple lives.

❤️ If you’re healthy and able, consider donating blood this month.
❤️ If you already donate, thank you for being a hero in our community.
❤️ Share this post to help spread awareness and encourage others to give.

Together, we can ensure a safe and stable blood supply for our patients when they need it most.

🥣 Healthy Winter Nutrition 🥣

Eating well during the winter doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple, nourishing foods can help support your immune system and keep you feeling your best during colder months.

🥕 Immune-supporting foods to include:
• Citrus fruits, berries, and kiwi
• Leafy greens and colorful vegetables
• Lean proteins like chicken, eggs, beans, and fish
• Garlic, onions, ginger, and turmeric
• Yogurt and other probiotic-rich foods

💧 Don’t forget hydration!
It’s easy to drink less water in cooler weather, but staying hydrated helps support immune function and overall health.

🍲 Easy winter meal ideas:
• Soups, stews, and chili
• Sheet-pan chicken and vegetables
• Beans and rice with veggies
• Oatmeal topped with fruit and nuts

🧠 Mental Health in the New Year 🧠

As the holidays end and routines return, many people experience post-holiday blues, increased stress, or symptoms of winter depression. Shorter days, colder weather, financial stress, and changes in routine can all take a toll, and you’re not alone.

💙 It’s okay if the new year doesn’t feel exciting right away.
Mental health is just as important as physical health, and support is available.

🌿 Helpful steps you can take:
• Keep a regular sleep routine
• Get daylight or fresh air when possible
• Stay connected with family or friends
• Move your body in small, manageable ways
• Ask for help when things feel overwhelming

📞 When to seek support:
If feelings of sadness, anxiety, or hopelessness last more than two weeks, interfere with daily life, or worsen, it may be time to reach out to a healthcare professional.

🆘 Immediate help:
If you or someone you love is in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. Available 24/7.

You don’t have to face this season alone. Help is here, and healing is possible.
