On the 29th December 2011 Lauren was diagnosed as having Rhabdomyosarcoma a cancer which can only affect children. “Fewer than 60 children are diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma in the UK each year. Most of them are younger than 10 years old. It is more common in boys than girls. Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common of the soft tissue sarcomas in children. These tumours develop from muscle or fibrous tissue and can grow in any part of the body. The most common areas of the body to be affected are around the head and neck, the bladder or the testes. Sometimes tumours are also found in a muscle or a limb, in the chest, or in the abdominal wall. Occasionally, if the tumour is in the head or neck region, it can spread into the brain or the fluid around the spinal cord. “
Lauren's tumour has grown on the muscle at the back of her palate. Lauren has to have 9 sessions of chemotherapy and then a course of radiotherapy. However because of where Lauren's tumour is, doctors feel that 'Proton Therapy' may be a more appropriate treatment for Lauren. Proton Therapy is, however, only available in either Florida or Oklahoma and Lauren would therefore have to travel for her treatment and stay in America for at least 6 weeks whilst she receives treatment. We will find out in a few weeks if the NHS have decided to send Lauren to America for this therapy or whether she will have radiotherapy at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. The full object of the Fund is:
To provide support, including financial assistance, to Lauren's family in helping fund her journey through treatment and any other reasonable costs incurred by the family due to a result of this illness. If the above object is fulfilled then the objects of the Fundraising is to assist other children currently receiving treatment on the Oncology Ward/Ward 15 at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
