March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and Health | St. Dominic offered our community a powerful, hands-on way to understand colorectal cancer risks, prevention and early detection.

Guests walked through the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Society – Mississippi larger-than-life inflatable colon and saw how polyps and cancer develop. Our clinical experts also shared why screenings start at age 45, how family history shapes risk and what new treatments are offering hope to patients across Mississippi.

Congratulations to LaTasha Burton, RN, Float Pool, who was named FMOL Health | St. Dominic’s most recent DAISY award recipient! The DAISY award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day.

LaTasha’s compassion made a lasting impact on one of our Emergency Department patients, who nominated her for going above and beyond during a busy shift.

“There were lots of things going on in the ER that night, and my anxiety was through the roof. At some point, I was crying and asked my nurse, who was LaTasha, to just get me discharged. She calmed my nerves and brought me a snack and a drink. She brought my spirits up and kept me updated. When I finally was moved to a room, she gave me a big hug before I left. I know it sounds so small, but I watched her handle her busy shift like a champ. She never wavered from kindness, and she kept her professionalism.”

Join us in thanking LaTasha for showing what compassionate care looks like and for making a meaningful difference when it mattered most.

Congratulations to Naria Stephens, Social Worker for St. Dominic Medical Associates, who was named the most recent FMOL Health | St. Dominic Franciscan Service Award recipient. The Franciscan Service Award is the highest honor a team member can receive across our health system for those who go above and beyond to exemplify the values of our organization and to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.

Naria’s colleagues say she approaches her role of social worker as a calling. Her dedication to the well-being of others and her ability to bring a sense of peace and reassurance to families during difficult times reflect the spirit of our mission.

“When Naria walks into the clinic, you feel it,” the nomination said. “She brings joy and positivity that lifts the whole team. Naria’s impact is felt across clinics and communities. Naria helped a patient in a difficult marriage find a new home and start a new chapter in life. That patient is now thriving – all because Naria cared enough to go beyond the referral and walk alongside her through the process. This level of compassion and persistence inspires all of us to live our values more fully. Naria doesn’t just connect patients to resources – she changes lives.”

Join us in thanking Naria for her commitment to helping others. We’re proud to have her on our team!
