📚👶 Did you know that reading to your child from the very beginning can have a powerful impact on speech and language development?

Even before children can talk, they are listening, learning, and building the foundation for communication.

Reading together helps children:

🧠 Build vocabulary – Hearing new words helps little brains grow.
👂 Develop listening skills – Babies learn to pay attention to sounds and language.
💬 Support early speech and language development – Repetition and rhythm help children learn how language works.
❤️ Strengthen bonding – Snuggling up with a book creates positive connections with language and learning.
📖 Build early literacy skills – Turning pages, looking at pictures, and hearing stories prepares children for future reading success.

The best part? You don’t have to read every word perfectly. Talk about the pictures, point to objects, and let your child explore the book.

Even just a few minutes a day can make a big difference.

📚 Start early, keep it fun, and make reading part of your daily routine.

Did you know prepositions are an important language milestone?

Prepositions are words like in, on, under, behind, and next to. They help children describe where things are and understand directions.

These small words play a big role in communication and learning. Children use them to:
✔ Follow directions (“Put the toy in the box”)
✔ Describe locations (“The cat is under the table”)
✔ Tell stories and explain ideas

If your child has difficulty understanding or using these words, it can affect following directions, classroom learning, and storytelling.

The good news is that these skills can often be strengthened through play-based language activities.

📚 Try this at home:
Hide a toy and give clues like “It’s under the chair!” or “Look behind the couch!”

If you have concerns about your child’s language development, a speech-language evaluation can help determine if additional support would be beneficial. Contact info@potterspeech.org or call 904-505-0847 for more information!

🧠💬 Myth: A child has to sit still and “pay attention” to make progress in speech therapy.

✨ Truth: Communication can grow through movement, play, and connection.

At Sensory Speaking, we don’t expect children to fit into a box to learn. Some kids learn best while building, swinging, pacing, or exploring the room—and that’s okay!

Speech therapy is about engagement, not compliance. It’s about meeting a child where they are and building communication in ways that feel safe, motivating, and meaningful to them.

Progress doesn’t require perfect sitting.
It requires connection, trust, and the right support. 💛

🤝All learners are welcome here. If you have concerns about your child’s speech or language development, we’re here to help!

🤔 TRUE or FALSE: Sounds produced by infants and toddlers don’t count as words.

❌ FALSE!

Those early sounds absolutely count! 🙌

When your child says “ba” for ball or “moo” for cow, they are:
✨ Communicating with purpose
✨ Connecting sounds to meaning
✨ Building the foundation for real words

Even animal sounds, exclamations (“uh-oh!”), and consistent word approximations are powerful steps in language development.

Every little sound is progress. 💬💛

✨ What To Say Instead ✨

Did you know that how we talk to children can make a BIG difference in their language development?

Instead of asking lots of questions, try modeling and commenting! 💬

❌ “What color is that?”
✅ “That’s a big blue truck!”

❌ “What are you doing?”
✅ “You’re building a tall tower!”

❌ “What’s this?”
✅ “It’s a dog! The dog says woof!”

When we reduce questions and increase comments, we:
✔️ Take pressure off children to “perform”
✔️ Model rich vocabulary and longer sentences
✔️ Keep interactions fun and natural
✔️ Support language growth in a stress-free way

Remember: Conversation is better than quizzing! 💛

🎯 Want to encourage more communication? Try communication temptations!

Create fun, everyday moments that naturally invite your child to ask, comment, or request—like offering a favorite toy just out of reach or making silly sounds with a snack. 🍎🧸

These little prompts turn everyday play into BIG language opportunities! 💬✨

💬 Want to help your child say more? Try expansion!

When your little one says a word or short phrase, expand it by adding more words. For example, if they say “ball,” you can say “big ball” or “I see the ball.”

This helps build vocabulary and models how to make longer, meaningful sentences! 🧠✨
