Our monument recognition for the months of October/November, 2025 are the Woodmen of the World (WOW) markers in cemeteries located near Mitchell located either in Jasper County or Cherokee County in Kansas. They are distinctive gravestones, often shaped like tree stumps or stacked logs, that signify membership in the Woodmen of the World fraternal organization. In 1890 Joseph Root founded Woodmen of the World, a fraternal benefit organization, the purpose of which was to make life insurance affordable to everyone. From 1890 until 1900 the policy included a tombstone. Woodmen of the World have been a great success story. Between 1890 and 1898 membership grew to 88,000 and hit 750,000 by 1915. Joseph Root used the name ‘woodmen’ because he was inspired by a sermon that talked about “woodmen clearing the forest to provide for their families.” The Woodmen of the World emblem, featuring an axe, maul, and wedge, is frequently incorporated into the design. Root declared that June 6th of each year to be ‘Woodmen Memorial Day” and woodmen who had died should be remembered and honored. Woodmen of the World are involved still in some communities and routinely holding dinners, dances and society events. The organization also provides college scholarships for high school students and holds summer camps for local youth. Today, Woodmen of the World is one of the largest fraternal benefit society with open membership in the United States. The organization provides not only insurance, but also investment, bonds, real estate and mortgage loans to its members. Its 2010 financial performance included gross revenue of $1.2 billion. WOW is active in local communities, providing aid to senior citizens, the physically impaired and orphans. Woodmen of the World is now known as WoodmenLife and there are still a few chapters located in Missouri.
