I make a lot of meditations about breathing. Mostly because when I breathe with other beings, whether they be people, plants, animals, or something else, I understand more about how we are all in this life together. When I breathe in places where the more than human world actually feels bigger than human, I know my place, and therefore feel more connected.

It took a while for breathing to feel this holy. Breathing doesn’t always feel natural. Breathing can sometimes feel forced or like an act of control, breathing can sometimes feel inaccessible, breathing can sometimes signal that something internally is offkilter.
If you don’t resonate with breathing the way I do in this moment that’s OK, I would love to hear what other mechanisms are useful for feeling connected, present, and alive, in your body and in this world.

I began teaching yoga in 2011(when this photo was taken). By that point I had already been practicing for six years. Like most things in life at 22, I didn’t know what my yoga path would look like, I just kept putting one foot in front of the other. Trying to move with intention, trying to find my edges, trying to listen trying to discover who I was supposed to be.

Some years I felt like a really good teacher, other years I felt like I had no idea what I was doing. Sometimes I did things really well, sometimes I messed up.

More than anything else, practicing Yoga has been a way to come home to myself. To remember what it feels like to actually feel, in ways that are truly and only mine.

The last few months have been difficult for so many reasons. Whether you were impacted by the fires in January or you are feeling the weight of uncertainty in our shared political life, or maybe you’ve been experiencing a struggle closer to home or with in your family. I think we could all use a little extra care these days.

I’m really honored to be partnering with Layne and Jamie to offer a special bi-weekly healing and somatic(internally-oriented) series at their gym .
Whatever your experience of the past few months has been, however you have been impacted, you are welcome to participate.

Trauma-sensitive yoga is a modality that developed from conversations between yoga practitioners, clinical psychologists and trauma survivors, that prioritizes a person’s own experience of their body, emotions, and experiences.

ln a trauma sensitive yoga class you have the chance to focus on listening to your own body and making choices that suit you without judgement or dimishment. In our series, you’ll get to move on your own terms, feel your own feelings as you want, and honor the sensations you notice in your body.

As we move together I hope that you will begin to feel a new sense of at-home-ness and safety within your own body that you can take with you into your daily life.

TC-Trauma Sensitive Yoga is for all bodies and capacities. This series is offered for for free to all fire survivors and on a sliding scale to anyone else impacted. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Healing space is sacred space.

I always try to walk a space after I set it up. As I walk, I set an intention for curiosity, care, compassion for the participants who are choosing to show up and claim space for themselves.

Tonight for Healing With Yoga we’ll be exploring how we take up space. The room is ready for you.

Thanks to for hosting this special circle.

The opportunity to build a sense of connnection to the good and not so good moments of my days is one I try to offer to those who practice with me too. If you’ve been in a class with me you’ll probably recognize a version of the questions and remember the invitiation to journal or reflect at the end of a class.

I reformulated these questions for the closing of a recent retreat offering. Since then they’ve become my end of day journal prompts. I’ve found that I enjoy closing my day by remembering what it held for me. I feel like I remember my lived experiences more and have a greater appreciation for the gift of living even in my ordinary days.

📝What are your go-to reflection questions? Do you have an end of day reflection routine?
