When Yolanda Claire was diagnosed with breast cancer, she learned that being independent doesn't mean going through it alone.
From her patient navigator who became her closest ally, to her Beacon Medical Group Oncology Elkhart team's access to Mayo Clinic expertise, Yolanda found world-class treatment and compassionate support close to home. Today, she's cancer-free and eager to share what she learned along the way.
Q1: What did you wish someone had told you before your procedure?
Yolanda: "I wish someone had told me how vulnerable a cancer diagnosis can make you feel, even when you're used to being independent. I thought I could handle everything on my own, but having my patient navigator attend that first appointment with (my oncologist) was priceless."
Q2: What was your biggest fear, and how did it turn out?
Yolanda: "I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of appointments and treatments ahead of me. But I made a list and crossed them off as I went, transforming what felt like a mountain of to-dos into a series of achievements that gave me strength to keep moving forward."
Q3: How did having access to Mayo Clinic expertise impact your confidence?
Yolanda: "Dr. Toor initiated a consultation with an expert at Mayo Clinic, which gave me an even greater sense of confidence in my care. That really gave me a sense of peace, knowing Beacon and Mayo Clinic were totally on the same page. I felt like I was really covering the bases and getting world-class treatment close to home."
Q4: What would you tell your family/friends about supporting someone through this?
Yolanda: "Let them accept help, even if they think they can handle it alone. Having Dawn as my advocate and a second set of eyes and ears at appointments was invaluable. Sometimes you need that friendly face more than you realize."
Q5: What's different about your life now compared to before treatment?
"I feel great and 95% positive about my future. I have very strong confidence in Beacon. I just spout how much I love Beacon to the world! My hardest days are behind me, and I'm back to enjoying everyday life with a lighter spirit."
