Get you a doula and get educated on these things, mama!
Toss that pitocin aside and let me help you get that baby out with my own personal recipe, what I like to call the "get this baby out regimen" ;)
Pitocin is a synthetic version of oxytocin derived from the pituitary glands of animals. Used to bring on contractions and active labor, pitocin is being used in about 40% of laboring women😳
Unfortunately, pitocin is being over used and mismanaged for reasons such as:
-Convenience
-Being “past due”
-Baby is measuring “big”
It’s also being used as a precaution post birth to prevent hemorrhage...most moms don’t even realize they were administered pitocin once baby was born. The sad part is, hemorrhage is also a listed side effect of pitocin😳
Direct from the manufacturer insert itself, these are the following risks of Pitocin:
“Bradycardia
Premature ventricular contractions and other arrhythmias
Permanent CNS or brain damage
Fetal death
Neonatal seizures have been reported with the use of Pitocin.
Low Apgar scores at five minutes
Neonatal jaundice
Neonatal retinal hemorrhage
Anaphylactic reaction
Water toxicity due to severe levels of water retention
Postpartum hemorrhage
Cardiac arrhythmia
Fatal afibrinogenemia
Nausea
Vomiting
Premature ventricular contractions
Pelvic hematoma
Subarachnoid hemorrhage
Hypertensive episodes
Rupture of the uterus “
There are many other natural ways to induce labor and bring on contractions, and other ways to prevent postpartum hemorrhage (sucking on a piece of umbilical cord or placenta, and Shepherds Purse which should only be used AFTER the placenta has been birthed). Pitocin should be your VERY LAST resort if medically necessary.
Some natural options include:
-Foley bulb
-Acupuncture
-Acupressure
-Massage therapy
