Behavior tends to be an outward reflection of what is going on inside, often things the child doesn’t fully understand yet or know how to express. For children with autism, overwhelm comes easily. Sensory issues, transition difficulties, communication struggles, emotional dysregulation, or even a combination of all of the above can show up as what appears to be a behavioral problem. It’s actually a lack of tools and skills needed to navigate situations in a way that makes sense to them. The core goal of ABA therapy is to look beyond the behavior to understand what’s happening under the surface.

February is the month of love! With Valentine’s day comes hearts, chocolates, and an influx of affection - the things traditionally associated with love and connection. These things follow a stereotype that is perpetuated through media and pop culture, but it doesn’t show the entire picture. Love can actually show up in many different ways, without changing the meaning one bit. Read more in our latest blog.

Children with autism may express affection and connection in ways that differ from what some may consider traditional methods such as hugging or saying words like “I love you.” That doesn’t mean that they don’t feel that love, it just means they communicate in their own way.

You’ve survived the holiday break, but what comes next? You’re not alone if you find that the transitionary period after a long holiday break seems difficult - and you’re not imagining it, either. It’s typical for families to notice behavioral changes after extended time off from school and therapy. You may notice difficulty with previously mastered skills, big emotions and/or a harder time dealing with transitions. While it can be discouraging to feel like your child’s progress has been set back, it’s important to understand that regression of this nature is not only common, but typically temporary.

The holidays can be overstimulating for anyone, but are a particular challenge for autistic kids. The combination of a change in routine, overwhelming events and unfamiliarity can very quickly create the perfect storm of dysregulation. If this sounds like a familiar occurrence, don’t worry - you’re not alone. With a bit of planning though, you can hold on to the holiday magic in a way that works best for your child and family.

The holidays are known as the season of giving, a time when many people take the time to come together and provide food, support and resources to make sure families have what they need.

Every donation matters, but there’s a reason why special consideration should be taken when it comes to providing inclusive items. Many autistic children (and adults) experience intense food sensitivities that strongly impact their lives. This may look like texture preferences, sensory discomfort, specific routines, and even allergies.

This isn’t a child being a picky eater or preferring different foods - it’s a systemic response they have no control over. Read more about the impact of food sensitivities and some suggestions on inclusive donations this holiday season in our newest blog.

The holidays are already a difficult time for many autistic children. Routines change and sensory overload is in full gear - having access to comfortable and familiar foods can make a huge difference in their overall well-being.
