Our Story
What In The World Is Alkamba??
"Alkamba" is a nickname given to a village in west Africa for their strong sense of unity and working together, the meaning of the word being "community". We started Alkamba Express with the goal to use the power of fashion to help create a bridge between cultures. We desire to create an atmosphere of community no matter where you're from or how you look. Our passion for style, art and culture influence the ideas you have discovered today.
Alkamba Express was created by two people who have experienced and have a joyful passion for different cultures. Abraham Sisay grew up in a tiny country in Africa called the Gambia. In the Gambia there was a village called Kudang (also known as Alkamba). On his first and only visit there Sisay became very ill and was never allowed to go back, yet he was always captivated by stories of grand adventure and excitement from others who visited this village. So Alkamba has become a mysterious village which has always stuck in his mind and from his curiosity has flowed a majority of his creative and inventive ideas.
Vaughn Burris, the co-creator of Alkamba Express, was born and raised in the diverse inner city of Kansas City, MO. From those roots have sprouted her passion for travel, the arts, and designing. With Sisay moving here in 2012 from the Gambia and Burris growing up here, both have fallen in love with the many art scenes in Kansas City, which is why you will see many of their designs inspired by them.
Behind each of their designs is a representation of passion for the arts and for people. Their mission is to use the power of fashion to help create a bridge between cultures.
