Winter weather across the Southeast is expected to be severe this weekend, with significant ice from Texas to the Carolinas. Now is the time to prepare.

Our insurance team at Oakbridge has put together a checklist to help prevent loss and keep you safe!

Before the storm:
• Check on family, neighbors, and anyone who relies on electricity.
• Prepare food, water, and supplies for 3+ days.
• Test generators and confirm safe heat sources.
• Protect pipes: insulate, disconnect hoses, and cover outdoor faucets.
• Secure outdoor items and clear gutters.
• Fuel up vehicles and pack emergency essentials.
• Bring pets indoors! Do not leave them outside in these harsh elements!

During the storm:
• Avoid travel. Ice is dangerous even with 4WD.
• Keep thermostats steady and let faucets drip.
• Never use generators or grills indoors.

After the storm:
• Safely remove snow/ice from roofs and walkways and watch for ice dams.
• Check for frozen or burst pipes.
• Document damage early with photos and receipts.

Small actions early prevent big losses later. A slow pipe drip, a wet ceiling stain, or a flickering breaker after a storm is not something to “watch for a few days.” That’s how $5,000 losses turn into $75,000 ones.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and take care of one another.
