How many of you love candles? Are they really safe for your home?

I love candles for their cozy ambiance and soothing scents, but did you know some candles can harm your health? Many common candles release toxic chemicals that act as hormone disruptors, especially for children and pregnant women. Here's what to watch out for and how to choose safer options:

Harmful Candle Types to Avoid:

1️⃣ Paraffin Wax Candles

Made from petroleum, they release harmful chemicals like benzene and toluene, which can irritate your lungs and are linked to cancer.

2️⃣ Synthetic Fragrance Candles

Often labeled as “fragrance” or “parfum,” these can contain phthalates, which disrupt hormones and harm reproductive health.

3️⃣ Lead-Core Wick Candles

Though banned in some countries, imported candles may still use lead-core wicks, which release toxic fumes.

4️⃣ Brightly Colored Candles

Dyes in candles can contain heavy metals that are released into the air when burned.

Safer Candle Options:

1️⃣ Natural Wax

Choose beeswax, soy wax, or coconut wax over paraffin.
2️⃣ Safe Wicks

Look for candles with cotton or wood wicks to avoid toxic metals.
3️⃣ Essential Oil Scents

Pick candles scented with pure essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances.

4️⃣ Transparent Labels

Avoid vague terms like “fragrance” without clear ingredient details.
Some clean and safe brands include Beeswax Co., Bluecorn Naturals, and Mrs. Meyers Clean Day. By making these swaps, you can enjoy your candles without compromising your health. 🕯️🌿

Did you know that perimenopause can increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease:

Hormonal Fluctuations
Estrogen and progesterone levels drop during perimenopause, leading to increased insulin resistance. This can cause higher blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Weight Gain and Fat Distribution
Hormonal changes often lead to weight gain, particularly around the abdomen. This visceral fat increases inflammation and raises the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Changes in Cholesterol Levels
During perimenopause, LDL ("bad" cholesterol) often rises, while HDL ("good" cholesterol) decreases. These shifts contribute to plaque buildup in arteries, increasing heart disease risk.

Increased Blood Pressure
Declining estrogen levels can lead to stiffened blood vessels and higher blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease.

Sleep and Stress Factors
Perimenopause can bring sleep disturbances and heightened stress, both of which disrupt blood sugar regulation and increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease over time.

Is It Perimenopause? 5 Signs Every Woman Over 35 Should Know

If you’re over 35 and experiencing changes in your body or emotions, it might not just be stress or anxiety—it could be perimenopause, the transitional phase before menopause. Unfortunately, many women are misdiagnosed and prescribed antidepressants, overlooking the real cause.

Here are 5 common signs of perimenopause:

1️⃣ Irregular Periods
Your cycle may become unpredictable—shorter, longer, heavier, or lighter. Hormonal shifts are often to blame.

2️⃣ Hot Flashes & Night Sweats
Sudden, intense heat episodes that can disrupt your day or wake you up at night.

3️⃣ Mood Changes
Irritability, anxiety, or mood swings are common and often misinterpreted as depression.

4️⃣ Sleep Disturbances
Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up feeling unrested can result from hormonal imbalances or night sweats.

5️⃣ Low Libido or Vaginal Dryness
Lower estrogen can lead to a decrease in s*x drive or discomfort during intimacy.

💡 What You Should Ask Your Doctor:

Could these symptoms be related to perimenopause?

Should we check my hormone levels?

Are there natural remedies or lifestyle changes I can try before medication?

How can I manage specific symptoms like hot flashes or sleep disruptions?

Take Charge of Your Health
Perimenopause is a natural part of life, but it’s essential to know the signs and advocate for yourself. Track your symptoms, ask the right questions, and seek a supportive healthcare provider.

As we get closer to open enrollment, here is important information to understand regarding your health insurance.

What is a Deductible?

A deductible is the amount you must pay out of pocket for healthcare services before your insurance starts covering costs. Once you meet this amount, your insurance will pay a larger part of your medical bills.

Example 1: If you have a $1,000 deductible, you will need to pay $1,000 for medical services before your insurance kicks in.

Example 2: If you need surgery that costs $5,000 and you haven’t met your deductible, you will pay the first $1,000. Afterward, your insurance will cover the majority of the remaining $4,000.
