COTA for #ColinBear

COTA for #ColinBear In December 2016, Colin was diagnosed with a rare mitochondrial disease that ultimately led to liver failure. Colin is the son of Suzanne and Christopher Swan.

After spending less than 3 weeks on the transplant list, he fortunately received a new liver, and is currently in recovery. With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant families are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure. The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-related expenses. In the Atlanta area, volunteers are raising funds for COTA in honor of transplant patients like local boy, Colin Swan. Born in 2015, Colin was diagnosed with liver failure before his first birthday. The doctors at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston performed a life-saving liver transplant on December 22, 2016. An estimated $60,000 is being raised by Cummings volunteers.

Hi. Haven’t posted in awhile, because there’s been nothing to report. No news is good news right?

Well, sometimes news is also good news.

Had our nephrology (kidney) appointment this morning, and it was decided that another follow up appointment wouldn’t be necessary.

The doctor is so pleased with his progress that she doesn’t think her services are needed going forward.

Of course, this could all change further down the road, but for now this is an absolute win and we’ll take it.

Thanks for being a part of our journey with us.

Two years ago tonight we found ourselves in an ER room, much like the one we spent this morning in. What unfolded over the next two months was terrifying, sorrowful, and at times almost despairing.

Almost.

Thanks to the great medical team at Egleston, and the constant support from all of you, we never lost hope and remained steadfast in our goal to bring him home.

This morning’s adventure aside, Colin’s doctors are impressed with how he’s doing. Rightfully so... he’s an impressive kid.

Thank you as always for everything.

Update: Colin went in for a high grade fever, but it’s gone back down and he’s being discharged. We’ll keep an eye on him through the weekend, and hope it doesn’t go back up.

Thanks as always for your continued support!

Just kidding. Prayers please.

Haven’t posted in awhile... which honestly is a good thing. But this page doesn’t just have to be the bearer of bad news. Scheduled clinic visit next Thursday. Until then, here’s Colin Bear hard at work on his art.

(According to him, there are two cows, a horse, a pig and one wolf in his drawing. But I guess that’s obvious.)

One year post transplant visit today! His doctors are very happy with how he’s doing. They reduced two of his medicines, and removed two more altogether.

Quite a difference from our time here a year ago... mostly because we’re not staying the night!

This time a year ago Suzanne and I were sitting in the surgery waiting room at Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children awaiting one of the many updates we’d receive throughout the early morning and early afternoon while the surgeons performed Colin’s liver transplant.

Hard to believe it’s already his… Liverversary? Transplantversary?

It’s been a year since our son was given a second chance at life.

A year of our “new normal.” And while not every one of the past 365 days has been easy, we’ve relished every single one of them, and will do the same for every day to come.

A year ago last night we were pacing, worrying, crying. The scene last night was… well, see for yourself.

Thank you for being with us on our journey.

Last lab visit this morning before we’re Disney bound this weekend!

Thanks as always for your well wishes.

(This is obviously post-lab. And there’s a tv behind us, hence his lack of focus.)

It’s been a minute since we have posted an update...trying not to jinx anything! Colin is doing fantastic! He has been home for almost two months without his drain and his liver numbers have never looked better! We had appointments with both hepatology and nephrology this week and everyone is please with how he is doing. There is a chance that we might even get to decrease the dosage of a few of his medicines! He is busy, active...and HAPPY! So proud of our little man! ❤️

Colin update: We are still at the hospital, but wanted to let y'all know what was going on. Colin developed an infection after his last procedure. We have been trying to figure out what caused it, but signs are pointing towards the tube itself. They removed the tube completely this morning, which is fantastic! Now we have to wait and see if it worked. Prayers are greatly appreciated!
