If you’ve never tried a real plant, I’d recommend going with a silver, silvery Ann, or satin pothos. There’s more silver options in that type of plant group but the point really is that they’re easy to care for, they’re beautiful, and they can withstand a decent amount of user error.

You could learn all of the best preventative plant tips out there but, if you’re new to real plants, it’s helpful to start with something that not only adds beauty to your space, it will survive as you get better at or learn how to keep your plant thriving...and, well, alive.

That’s just my two cents. I don’t know, do you think starting with something heartier is the right suggestion for new plant owners?

Sometimes you just need a new place to grow after a trauma.

This plant took a huge (and I mean HUGE) fall off of a shelf last year. Broken pot, broken plant. Lots of broken.

I repotted in my normal growing medium, dirt, after the fall of 2020 and it wasn’t thriving. Could have been lots of factors. But, I ended up swapping to LECA (the small clay balls you see in the picture). I really had nothing to lose because, well, this plant fell off of a very tall shelf and there was almost nothing left.

Sometimes a change allows for the time you need to heal. It certainly did for this plant.

I hope this reminds you, just like it did me, that sometimes change isn’t bad. It’s just a different growing medium that could help you out if you gave it half of a chance. 🥰

Just a happy plant.

I spent 2020 keeping more plants alive than I ever had in my whole life. As I spent months and months watering, feeding, pruning, and observing the plants in my house, I started wondering why I don’t care about myself the same way I want my plants to thrive.

That’s partly why I started process of cleaning my home up in November and was seriously considering doing in January.

Seeing my plants thrive and grow and win really made me consider what my life would look like if I took the same time to care for myself.

Has that ever happened to you? Your focus on something else makes you look at something internally that you’ve been neglecting?

Have you seen that video?

The one where someone sticks the ends of their green onion they got at the grocery store in the dirt and they keep growing? I don’t know what I thought, but I thought it wouldn’t work.

Here I am, surprisingly WRONG. They DO grow. And they grow fast! If you have kids or you’re just a curious adult like me and have some extra dirt, this is super fun to try! They start growing day one so you can see them changing every day! This is after one week of growth.🤯🤯🤯

If you’ve seen those green onion videos, did you think this was possible or impossible?

Look at the difference 24 hours can make. 🤯 swipe to see what happened.

My fittonia wilted out of nowhere and I panicked but I held off on over reacting with the whole water situation. I decided to butt water, with the normal amount, and you can see what happened twenty four hours later.

So, take a deep breath next time a situation looks dire. Something good could happen.

Same bath towel, different day.

I mean, I can’t blame the kid for having a few nap time favorites. I have a pillow I can’t sleep without.

Are you like that? Do you have a pillow, or fan, or blanket you just “have to have” to get a good sleep?

When you get new growth, sometimes you get death.

Take this plant. Two new leaves, and their stories are similar but different.
When new leaves come out, they normally are a very light green. The yellow you see in the background on the smaller leaf probably means it’s not going to survive. The interesting part is that little leaf was stuck for a long time (ever since I purchased the plant) and I had to help it get free last week but I acted too late. It came out with a lot of yellow but after I freed the first little leaf, it made room for the new, healthy leaf to come out that you see in the front.

I don’t know what would have happened if I hadn’t freed the first leaf. Maybe the second leaf would have been fine. Maybe they both would have died. Either way, all of these new leaves in the dead of winter is pretty cool.

Have you ever lost something in the process of growing?

Both are valuable.

I’d rather be wise, honestly. Thomas Sowell said, “Intellect is not wisdom,” and while that sentence isn’t saying one is better than the other, I think the differences between the two are apparent. Personally, I think history shows that it’s important to be mindful of their definitions and differences and the value each holds in whatever you’re doing.

I mean, not to start a fight or anything, but if you HAD to pick, would you rather be smart or wise?

Some things are not as dead as they seem.

My main ZZ plant got sick a few months ago. I topped most of it, dug up the rhizomes (the things that the stems grow out of), tried saving a few, and just left this rhizome to do it’s own thing, with no growths, in some dirt and I didn’t water it...because I truly thought it was dead.

But it wasn’t.

I’ve found from just living life...and taking care of plants...not everything dies right away. Sometimes, when you think you’ve screwed something up so bad you can’t recover from it, you’re surprised with good, new growth to try again.

Life’s pretty cool that way.

Something can be both beautiful and not completely healthy at the same time.

This plant is beautiful and this plant is extremely thirsty. You can see that from the way the leaves are beginning to curl under. If she doesn’t get water soon it will impact the beauty of the plant in a way that can be, if not attended to, irreversible.

Whether you’re taking care of plants or yourself, it’s KINDA smart to keep an eye out for important signs, like thirst, or hunger, or a need for rest. You know, the signs that can majorly impact quality of life.

So, while I go water (butt water) this plant, I hope maybe something is sparked in you. Do you know when you’re thirsty? Sleepy? Or need food? Maybe even a walk outside in the sunshine?

This seems a little too simple for the internet, but while everyone is making or not making resolutions for 2021, I hope you note signs when YOU need care to increase your quality of life.

I don’t know, I could write something long but you’d just get to the end of it to realize I only really wanted to tell you this: one of my plants has five new leaves. This is one of them.

One of the weirder things is that I have SEVERAL plants that are still churning out leaves at a crazy rate during (what I thought) was the dormant season for plants.

Does this ever happen to you? You grow in non-ideal situations? Cause that’s pretty darn cool. Keep on, keeping on.

Happy New Year’s Eve!

Caspian's just here waiting for Santa ❤️

He's been pretty good these past few weeks so I think Caspian's chances of getting coal in his stocking are lower than they were. 😂
