The U.S. government was long prohibited from negotiating prescription drug prices for Medicare, by the 2003 Medicare Modernization Act — legislation that established Medicare Part D under heavy pharmaceutical industry influence. That “non-interference clause” banned the federal government from using its buying power to secure lower prices, leaving negotiations to private insurance plans and pharmacy benefit managers.

In contrast, countries like Canada and the U.K. use centralized, government-run negotiations or national formularies to set price ceilings on medications. The result is that American patients often pay two to four times more for the same drugs.

The Affordable Care Act had the chance to correct this but didn’t correct this loophole — it expanded coverage but left drug pricing mechanisms untouched. Only in 2022, through the Inflation Reduction Act, did Congress finally authorize Medicare to negotiate prices for a limited number of high-cost drugs starting in 2026.

This long-standing restriction reflects how deeply pharmaceutical lobbying has shaped U.S. health policy and how captive our politicians are to these interests and not to the American people— protecting profits while other developed nations treat medicine as a public good.

When monopolistic insurance companies go unchecked in their anti-trust behavior—controlling the very agencies and politicians meant to regulate them—they entrench a system that’s destined to fail. The conversation has finally shifted from how do we regulate their abuses to how do we eliminate these parasitic middlemen altogether. And rightly so—because they are, and will continue to make themselves, obsolete.

Wealthcare in America 💰🏥
Having insurance isn’t the same as having access to healthcare. There’s no state agency ensuring that networks are actually adequate — meaning coverage often exists only on paper.

Whoever truly fixes our healthcare crisis could make everyday Americans 25% wealthier.
And whoever reins in the endless wars and the military-industrial complex could make us another 25% wealthier.
