This plant’s taste is bitter as all get out, herbaceous, with a rich deep undertone, & hints of acrid. When ingested this flavor sends a shiver down my spine. Settling me in the seat of myself, my center.
If we are focused on consuming only for enjoyment why would I intake such a flavor? Through taste you can distinguish herbal actions, getting acquainted with qualities that offer the body means for shifting
Health comes from consuming all flavors - sour, bitter, pungent (spicy), sweet, umami (savory)
Small amounts of bitter stimulates digestion; eases stagnation in the stomach; helps assimilation of nutrients and elimination of waste to occur
Acrid correlates to the influence if muscle relaxation ~ offering ease to the smooth muscle of our stomach & uterus, relaxing uterine cramps and untying those knots from your stomach. Even striated muscle can be more easily be relaxed when working with this remedy~ supporting the internal queue to drop your shoulders from your ears unclench your jaw
I have a deep love affair going with Blue Vervain~ Verbena hastata. One of two herbs I lovingly call the herbs of embodiment
A client recently asked how I would describe being grounded?
I imagine most folks have a sense for what it feels like to be with person who feel grounded. The common ‘down to earth’ sentiment. It feels steady, safe, present, connected. Imagine times when you’ve experienced a lived sense of these qualities inside yourself. What did it offer you?
To have ground underneath us allows us to be supported, held. To move and think with strength and grace
In comparison to have unsteady ground beneath us like when climbing a steep hillside, the challenge can interrupt this ease. Clenching muscles is apart of mistrust and being in a high alert state. Functional at times, but this high alert state is maladapted when we get stuck there as a baseline.
For me to be grounded is to be embodied~ To be nimble and creative in the face of a repetitive motion, production centered world. Knowing when my body & mind are overactive or disconnected, is to know when I need to come back to myself
Vervain helps me with this practice. What helps you feel grounded?
