Spirit totems can be with us for a lifetime or come to us for a short time when they have a message for us. That's what Dragonfly did for me.
It started several years ago in the New Orleans bayou. We were kayaking with a guide, and there were about eight of us. When we were leaving, dragonflies were all around my boat, and some landed on our pant legs. I put out my finger, and one climbed onto it, and I lifted it to my face and started talking to it (I do that with all critters, and trees., and I know they're listening.) It turned its head from side to side, watching me, until it flew off. Other totems -- an alligator, an owl, and a frog--made themselves quite obvious that day.
Months later we were back home and bicycling on a country road, and I was out ahead of Paul. A huge dragonfly, a beautiful powder- blue color, flew across my path from left to right, its flight exquisitely timed so I didn't have to slow down but had plenty of time to see it. I was surprised and delighted, and we cycled on. We eventually turned around (1/2 hour later?) and headed back, and from the right this time came the same dragonfly, again flying exactly the perfect speed and distance from me so I didn't have to slow. I was awestruck. I couldn't explain it. (I consulted my awesome friend Rose Iyer about the bike-riding visitation, and she thought it was telling me I had completed an important two-year period of my life, and it made sense. (Dragonfly can symbolize a two-year period because that is the amount of time they spend in the water as nymphs before they can fly. And Rose is clairvoyant and has given me extraordinary input at other times that I trust without question.)
Then last summer, a friend and I were kayaking in the Sammamish slough, and when we started out there were a lot of dragonflies all around us, and I greeted them as I do all critters. We paddled and picked berries (did you know ducks eat blackberries? They love them!) and hung around for hours. The slough became quiet, and we were just sitting in the water. Then a lone dragonfly showed up and dipped down to the water three times very quickly, and I said, "Susie, what do you think it was doing?" But before she could answer, the dragonfly hovered close to my face and sprayed me with water! We both burst out laughing, and she said, "I think you've been blessed!" And I truly believe that's what it was. ๐
