Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of progressive conditions that affect the brain.🧠

Each type of dementia stops a person’s brain cells (neurones) working properly in specific areas, affecting their ability to remember, think and speak.🗣💭

Doctors typically use the word ‘‘dementia’’ to describe common symptoms – such as memory loss, confusion, and problems with speech and understanding.👥

Learning how to recognise early signs of dementia can improve the support provided for an individual living with dementia. Our approach at MusiCare to encourage the use of musical therapy in order to stimulate the brain and ease the developing symptoms of dementia.💜

Berries are a yummy and healthy choice for your brain!

If you've been thinking about how to preserve your memory as you age, blueberries and strawberries might be the answer. A recent study found that eating berries delayed memory decline from aging up to two and a half years.

In addition to keeping your brain sharp, berries are full of antioxidants, which help prevent heart disease and cancer. They're also full of fiber, which helps keep you regular, and they're low in calories. So go ahead—add some berries to your diet today!

Empathetic communication is important for all of us, but especially when you're in a position of care for another person. When you're caring for someone, you want them to feel safe, comfortable and understood. Empathetic communication can help you do that—and it may be one of the most important skills you have when it comes to empathy.

Here are three ways empathetic communication can improve your home care practice:

✔Emotional Support

When you communicate with your clients in an empathetic way, they'll trust you more and open up about their needs and concerns. This will make them feel more comfortable with their care and give them the confidence to ask questions or express concerns.

✔Clear Communication

Empathetic communication is also great for helping clients understand what's going on in their home care routine—what tasks are being done and why. It's also important for caregivers to understand what tasks need to be done throughout the day and why those tasks are important (for example, if someone needs assistance with bathing). Empathetic communication allows both sides of this conversation to happen more clearly than if there were no empathy involved at all!

✔Build Trust with Clients

Gardening is an excellent exercise for seniors because it doesn't involve much physical exertion but keeps your mind and body busy. You may enjoy some time in the sun while also doing some exercise.

Seniors, you're not alone. We all want to stay warm, but sometimes that's easier said than done.

If you have a senior in your life who is struggling with hypothermia, here are some ways to make sure they stay warm and safe!

1) Check medications

Seniors can be more sensitive to the effects of cold weather because their bodies aren't as good at regulating their temperature as they used to be. Make sure your loved one is taking any necessary medications before heading outside.

2) Stay indoors during the day

If you have a senior who spends time outside during the day, try to keep them inside during those hours when it's most likely for them to become cold. Staying inside will also help keep them safe from other dangers like falling or slipping on ice.

3) Keep seniors warm in bed

If your loved one sleeps alone in their own room and/or doesn't wear pajamas or socks at night—or if they sleep in an unheated room—you may want to consider moving them into a warmer bedroom or adding extra blankets on top of their bedding, so they stay well-insulated while sleeping through the night!

Cooking food is an excellent way to be active because it encourages you to move around while doing something useful, such as cooking soup from scratch (which is delicious). It also enables you to prepare a delectable meal for yourself or others if they drop by unexpectedly!

The first step to avoiding hypothermia in seniors is checking their medications. Make sure they're taking their blood pressure and heart medications, and that they are up to date with their prescriptions.

The second step is staying warm at home—a heated blanket and some hot cocoa will do wonders!

The third step is keeping seniors warm in bed—no matter what season we're in, keeping a senior warm while they sleep will make sure they don't get cold.

The fourth step is nutrition: make sure your senior has enough food and drink to keep them warm during the day.

Finally, care for your loved one.
