Long time, no talk to! Since my last post in...what? January?? How can that be?! Anyway, I've spent these past few months attending all sorts of continuing education seminars. One of the new things I've learned and have been using in treatments with great success is massage cupping. Some people are familiar with the ancient Eastern medicine version of cupping that uses fire to create suction in strategically placed glass cups (often many cups are used at once and can often leave the dreaded 'hickie' marks). Many of you may have seen or experienced this type of cupping and it has been proven to have many benefits.
The type of cupping I'm doing is called Massage Cupping or Medi Cupping and it's a bit different. I use gentle suction with one or two cups at a time and no fire is used to create the suction. Instead, I have a tool that helps me create the suction and control the intensity. I keep the cup or cups moving across tight muscles and sore joints, adjusting the suction level as needed. Sounds a little weird but it's actually very relaxing.
So what are the benefits? Aside from being relaxing, cupping can soften tight muscles, muscle attachments, and scar tissue, loosen adhesions (places where soft tissues literally get stuck together), bring hydration and blood flow to body tissues, and open lymphatic pathways.
I have been skeptical about cupping for a long time but after hearing from many other massage practitioners about how great it is, I did a bunch of research and decided to gave it a try. And WOW! I have to admit I’m amazed by how well it works. Unlike many other massage techniques that are compressing and kneading tissue, compressing blood and lymph vessels, applying pressure to specific trigger points, and shearing across tight tissues, these little cups LIFT tissue and help to separate the layers. Lifting, not pushing. What a concept! And I haven't caused one hickie yet.
: )
Cupping can be done alone but it’s also easily integrated with other massage techniques. I’m not charging extra for cupping treatments so consider giving it a try next time you come in. And hey, thanks for reading! I’m excited. Can you tell?
