NEAT PINCER GRASP 👌🏼

Around 10-12 months, babies start to use the tips of their thumb and index finger to pick up small objects. It’s one of the most refined grasp patterns of infancy and a huge step towards independence. 👏🏼

This movement plays a big roll in self-feeding, fine motor control, and future skills like buttoning or writing.

Thanks for following along with this grasp development series! I hope it helps you notice the small (but powerful) milestones 🤍

I’m all for getting outside when we can (fresh air, big space, natural movement), but I also know Midwest winters and there may be days when going outside for long periods of time isn’t realistic. ❄️

On those days, you don’t always need to entertain your child or plan every minute. You can allow your kids to be bored. Boredom is usually where the best movement & imagination begin. 🤍

INFERIOR PINCER GRASP 🤏

🤏Around 9-10 months, babies start to use the pads of their thumb and the index finger to pick up small items. This is another step towards using a more refined grasp patterns.

🤏You may notice less whole-hand grabbing and more intentional finger movements as your baby explores tiny objects. These movements will help build the strength and coordination needed for self-feeding, play, and eventually the neat pincer grasp (more to come on this one soon!)

RADIAL DIGITAL GRASP🫰

🫰Around 7-9 months, you might notice your baby starting to use their thumb & fingertips to pick up and explore objects. This is known as a the radial digital grasp and it’s a big step in fine motor development.

This grasp shows growing finger control, better hand strength, and the beginning of more precise grasp patterns (more to come on that soon).

From me to you - a handful of affirmations to carry into this season. It’s okay to slow down and choose presence over perfection. 🤍

“Is he right handed?”
“Oh, she’s going to a lefty for sure.”

👐We love to guess which hand a child will prefer, but hand dominance is a long & gradual process.

👐Between ages 2-7 years, the brain hemispheres are still coordinating, motor pathways are strengthening, and both hands are practicing different roles. Kids experiment, switch sides, and test out different movements to figure out what feels efficient and comfortable.

👐Through two-handed play, kids develop the stability, strength, and motor patterns needed for one hand to eventually take the lead.

🖤A gentle reminder: there’s no rush. Hand dominance grows through time, repetition, and lots of play.
