This large-scale study offers a striking confirmation of a principle we've held for years: sleep is a pillar of cognitive health. Seeing that sleep disorders can predict dementia risk over a decade in advance is a crucial wake-up call. It shows that poor sleep isn't just a symptom of late-stage disease; it is an early and significant contributor. This is precisely why the Bredesen Protocol includes a comprehensive evaluation and optimization of sleep—addressing issues like sleep apnea, ensuring adequate deep sleep, and supporting the brain's vital glymphatic clearance system. The targets we recommend are total sleep of 7-8.5 hours, REM 90’ or more, deep sleep 60’ or more, and SpO2 of at least 94%.
