Black History Month is a time to honor the history, culture, and contributions of Black communities.

This post features a highlight on Edna Lewis, a pioneering chef and author who preserved and celebrated traditional Southern Black food-ways. Through her cookbooks and storytelling, she celebrated seasonal ingredients, community, and the cultural depth of Southern cuisine.

As a dietitian, I believe that honoring cultural food traditions is part of providing respectful, inclusive care.

Food is more than nutrients. It carries history, identity, and legacy. Food is a way for us to learn more about each other and to celebrate our different cultures.

This month (and beyond), consider:
• Supporting Black-owned restaurants and chefs
• Learning about the history behind cultural dishes
• Following and amplifying Black dietitians, chefs, and creators

What’s one Black-owned business, restaurant, chef, cookbook, or creator you love? Share below 💙

ARFID is one of the most misunderstood eating disorders.

It’s not “just picky eating,” it’s not a lack of willpower, and it’s not something someone simply grows out of.

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a real, complex condition that can affect nutrition status, growth, energy levels, mental health, and quality of life at ANY age.

It often shows up alongside anxiety, sensory sensitivities, GI issues, neurodivergence, or past negative food experiences.

In this post, we’re sharing 8 things we wish more people understood about ARFID. Spreading awareness leads to better support, less shame, and more effective care.

If you or someone you care for is struggling with ARFID, individualized support can make a meaningful difference. We currently have openings for 1:1 nutrition counseling and work from an ARFID-informed, compassionate, and practical approach, meeting you where you are and moving at your pace.

Food chaining is a gentle strategy that helps both picky eaters and children with feeding disorders try new foods by starting with something they already like—then making small, gradual changes to taste, texture, or appearance.

Each step builds on a familiar food, helping reduce food anxiety and increase variety without pressure or forcing.

This approach works best with patience and consistency.

If you or your client are navigating selective eating or food aversions, support from a dietitian can make the process smoother (and way less stressful).

I’ve been vegan for over a decade, and one thing that’s really amazed me over the years is how far vegan cheeses have come!

🧀 Some of the rind-style cheeses, the hard aged ones, the spreads, and even the melty slices are really impressive and delicious. I’m curious—what are your favorite brands? Do you love the rind cheeses, hard blocks, spreads, or the slices? How do you enjoy them? I’d love to hear your go-to ways to enjoy vegan cheese! Share in the comments! 👇

🌱 Choosing vegan foods means no animals are harmed, and it often has a lower environmental impact compared to traditional dairy. Beyond tasting amazing, many vegan cheeses also have some nutritional perks. Those made from nuts, seeds, or soy can provide protein, heart-healthy fats, and sometimes calcium and vitamin B12 if fortified.

Wondering if your baby is ready to start solid foods? While many babies begin around 6 months, readiness is about developmental skills, not just age.

Watching for cues like interest in food, head control, and coordination helps ensure a safe, positive start to solids.

This guide also includes information for babies with developmental delays, highlighting how feeding milestones may differ and how parents can support a safe, positive start to solids.

Introducing solid foods is such an exciting milestone, but knowing when your baby is ready for solids is just as important as knowing what to offer. Starting solids too early or even too late can affect feeding skills, nutrition, relationship with food, association with meals, and safety.

While many parents hear that babies should start solids “around six months,” readiness should be based on developmental signs, not age alone. As pediatric dietitians, we recommend watching for specific signs to know when your baby is ready to begin enjoying solid foods.

Learn the signs your baby is ready for solid foods, including helpful notes for children with developmental delays, and expert tips.
