Thanks to Wellington and Columbus friends for a great send off to me TEDx talk this weekend 🎯 As I walked the halls from my high school (actually most of them are new so this is not literal), here’s what came to mind for me:
🎯 We can’t be curious learners if we are battling our bellies or our weight health; yes I did my school work and got the grades, but like so many kids today, I was spending a lot of brain power on how to hide and fix my belly. What I needed was a team that could ‘check under the hood’ and decode my body’s signals, not present diet and exercise as exclusive or effective tools.
🎯 when we feel safe, our weight health resounds favorably. My high school was a total hodge podge of families and teachers who came together in support of our community. Sure there were challenges but the safety there led me and my body to feel more at peace than it would in so many other places - so grateful
🎯 there is such a thing as doing too much and there is so much value in time doing nothing. I don’t think we teach and role model this as well as we could for kids today.

And, to quote my favorite, the one we packed too m at of us into cars to drive to different outdoor venues to hear “if we couldn’t laugh we’d all go insane” Jimmy Buffet - you made high school extra fun, and this message is so true today as it was then.

I hope as I take the stage Sunday to make people laugh as a way to make them feel more open and comfortable to exploring the value of weight health. Can’t wait to share the talk with you all

I diagnose INFObesity in the majority of my patients AND practitioners. Curious if you’ve got it too? Play the “Never Have I Ever” game I created and share in my book, Your Best Shot, because excess info negatively factors into your weight health - today and tomorrow. Here’s are some quick tips:

1) Info isn’t Insights - you can know it all about nutrition, and not know what your body needs to run better.
2) Info from someone who doesn’t know you, your health and the “why” behind your choices - won’t be applicable for you today, or ever.
3) Data from a test and AI does not tell you what your body needs, it may tell you what it lacks in some areas or where to look but it’s not giving you the truly personalized recommendation you need to optimize your weight health.

To shift from info into insights? You need personalized assessment. That’s where I come in, my book and online access to my team as we help you decode your signals and data to personalize a plan.

Weight loss (and weight management) have failed to make Americans healthy. It disempowers, doesn’t heal or further worsens the dysfunction that the excess fat is trying to signal. Weight health is a better approach- it means that your bone, muscle, fat and water - the amount, type and location- are signals “check engine” lights in the car analogy to look under the hood, assess and repair dysfunction. That means giving not removing resources, and making sure the body can use what it gets. Your Best Shot (and the online program I created with access to my coaches) gives your body what it needs and helps it use it better. So you can enjoy weight health today and tomorrow. Got your book? How to sum up this weekend? AWESOME SAUCE! It was incredible to have colleagues receive my Weight Health vs Weight Loss message which such enthusiasm and beyond grateful to all those who are now using Your Best Shot to partner with their patients in weight-health hormone optimization. I am grateful to the men in this picture for intentional efforts to promote women in our fields, including to recognize dietitians as equal partners in optimal health outcomes. It was also so great to see so many incredible colleagues share their wisdom and shine on stage and off. Way too many incredible moments and people to highlight here but one deserves attention - Jason and his team from Cambridge Healthtech who took over this conference and worked tirelessly to make it happen at the caliber (and exceeded) expected. It’s a privilege to work with them and so looking forward to next year and beyond. Closed out with friends and epic win. Now to tuck-in for the snow storm.

Some highlights:
- meeting Lee Hood and watching an 87 y old blow minds in the most empowering and inspiring presentation
- seeing colleagues like uplevel audiences with their presentations
- watching my friend soar on stage & introduce her new microbiome Magic … parents and pediatricians are going to be so thrilled

Top question I get daily “do I need more protein” and with patients my answer is “let’s see”. We evaluate their total nutrition intake (yes total is key and the sum of supplements, food and beverages) and timing. But we also evaluate their body’s response to their current intake and if increasing protein, we continue to assess it. Your body will give you the best data about what it needs more (or less of) and when the amount isn’t the issue but rather it needs help using it. That’s why I wrote Your Best Shot - so everyone has a playbook for how to optimize weight health including giving their body an optimal amount of protein and helping it use it to run better.

Yes I think doctors should learn better nutrition - that’s why I’m faculty and a guest speaker to teach them at so many different institutions. But let’s be real clear, learning and knowing are not the same as practicing.

Those of us with credentials and training in whole-person better nutrition care (qualified RDs and CNS) should lead weight health optimization. Our playbook and toolkit is vast, evidence-based and practice-informed. We aren’t going to diagnose and prescribe, we are going to get curious and personalize. Then we will review outcomes - pivot as needed - and optimize.

So if you’re not happy with your weight health and you’ve met with your DR, or if your DR has prescribed medication, protein, fiber and strength training. It’s time go backwards - meet with a qualified RD to personalize your plan. And if you’re a DR, happy to support your patients with RDs (and CNS) certified in weight health optimization. You refer to experts all the time for other reasons, great to do it hear.
