Our Story
I received my first service dog when I had a car accident in 2005 & was told, I may never walk again or use my left side. We chose one of my german shepherd pups & she was sent off to dog training school. When I went to pick her up, they said ,”Here is your dog, this is what she does.. & good luck”... THAT WAS IT!. So here I am, in a body cast, with a dog I can’t operate. I was already in the pet industry as a dog groomer, so I had enough skills to continue working with her. This dog gave me the will to live, the will to fight thru daily pain & struggle. She helped me learn to walk again & gave me the strength to stay in this world. She loved me. I had no feeling in my left arm so I continuously drop things. I may drop it 6 times in a row... but my girl was right there to pick up the dropped item.. again & again & again. And HAPPY to do it... I knew I had to help the service dog industry & other disabled people.
In 2010 I went to the Tom Rose school for dog trainers in St. Louis. I graduated a year later & continued my training with Missouri head narcotics team, (now retired), Darren Richardson. He worked with me in tracking, nose work, & the legal in & outs with owning a service dog. I began rescuing. We pulled 18 german shepherds out of Devore County & San Bernadino County animal shelters in CA. & had them shipped to me in MO. I spent the next 4 years working with rescues. Out of 18.. only one was able to clear his hips & elbows, was DM clear & had the right temperament to do service dog work. This was when I gave up on rescues for our program & started our breeding program. We now provide our own dogs for program, but we are always happy to train a dog that is brought to us that has cleared it’s testing. We specialize in mobility dogs. So it is very important the dog has the heath that is needed to work this job for about 8 years.
We have trained service dogs for just about everything. Seeing Eye assist, medical alerts, autism, PTSD, Mobility. Dogs can do so much & we are just now tapping into the many things that they can do for us... & it’s wonderful. Our program not only trains the dog, but trains the owners how to work with the dog & how to handle the many situations that you will be subject to working a service dog in the public. No service dog is ever placed with the client with out being taught how to work their dogs. The handlers will either come here (we provide housing when possible) or we take the dog to them & spend the necessary time with them (this can take up to 2 weeks). WE PROVIDE 100% OF THE TRAINING FOR FREE...but their are cost that we acquire every day, The dogs must be feed, areas must be cleaned & sanitized EVERY day, yards must be cleaned, bedding washed & replaced as needed, monthly worming & flea meds, training equipment, we have to take them out in public daily for public access training & this is a cost we absorb too. The dogs also must be boarded for the 16 weeks to 16 months that they are in program. This cost is about $25.00 a day. That is all that is required for each team to pay. We are striving to be self sufficient so one day we can provide these dogs at no cost to our disabled handlers.
