You reap what you sow is a metaphor which means you will eventually have to face up to the consequences of your actions. In this metaphor, to reap is "to gather a crop" and to sow means "to plant seeds." Which can also be applied to the act of thinking. For example, the things we put into our mind will grow and become our reality. Our reality reflects our inner selves. Our subconscious thoughts, emotions, and beliefs translate into how we carry ourselves, how we treat ourselves, our environment, the people we surround ourselves with, and how we treat others.
The things that are within our control include our thoughts, words, actions, behaviors, and feelings. We cannot control how others think or feel about us, nor can we control the things they say or do. When we place our time and energy into things that are beyond our control, we move further away from what we really want. When working on our higher self, there are plenty of things that can distract us from what really matters. Everything from our phones, social media, television, our friends, relationships, family gatherings, and other recreational activities.
None of these are necessarily bad for you but indulging in them without dedicating time to oneself can prove to be a major distraction. Some can become addictive or can work as a major coping mechanism. For instance, taking time to self-reflect can be painful due to unresolved trauma, so one might binge watch a series of show to fill their time and avoid dealing with it. Rather than placing effort into chasing things that may or may not be beneficial to you, try working on your inner self. Finding your inner peace will manifest into different areas of your life and present you with opportunities that resonate with you vibrationally.
