Alumni Highlight: Brittany LaBonte ~ PA-C, Associate Professor at Franklin College ⭐️

Today we’re celebrating Brittany LaBonte, who led a service-learning medical mission to rural Belize, where many community members face long travel distances and limited access to healthcare. Working with minimal supplies – often only what the team brought with them- Brittany and her colleagues practiced what they called “MacGyver medicine,” adapting creatively to deliver meaningful care.

Brittany says, “The experience, reinforced the importance of adaptability, teamwork, and culturally responsive, holistic care. It was both humbling and eye-opening, reminding us that meaningful impact is not about resources alone, but about presence, creativity, and partnership with the community.”

Brittany says that she returned a better educator and clinician and hopes to return to Belize to serve the same community.

We’re so proud to share Brittany’s experience and the ways she has served to improve global health 💙

Alumni Highlight: Corbi Sandoe ~ Pediatric PA-C 🌟

Corbi led a team of PA students and healthcare providers on a medical mission trip to Belize! They performed knee injections and musculoskeletal exams on local farm workers and saw patients with hypertension and diabetes.

They also held a pediatric day at the clinic and did well visits, newborn visits, and weight checks and treated rashes and cold symptoms.

“Once people knew we were there, people with many other ailments came to be seen.”

Corbi described how the biggest impact made was working alongside the healthcare system that was already in place and supporting them with the skills they had to offer.

“If we don’t have a sustainable partner to work with, then our efforts are really minimal or acute. One of the focuses of GHI is to make sure to have local partners to create sustainability to the people we serve.”

Alumni Highlight: Natalie Asbach ~ PA-C 🌟

This past May, Natalie led a team of healthcare professionals and students on a medical mission trip to Uganda, where they partnered with local clinics to provide care and education. During her time there, she gained a deeper understanding of the different levels of care provided and the challenges created by limited resources.

💬 “Some hospitals are more than 20km [12 miles] from small rural villages with no mode of transportation except their feet.”

The hospitals are not much larger than an outpatient clinic in the U.S., and they do not have machines to monitor patients. Women have to purchase “Mama Kits” to bring to their labor if they want sterile drapes and gloves. These are just some of the challenges that healthcare workers in Uganda have to overcome.

💬 “But I leave so encouraged because those who are caring for these small villages are so passionate about helping their people. I’m so impressed by the skills they have in the creativity they use due to lack of supplies.”

This trip motivated Natalie to collaborate more closely with local healthcare systems to develop sustainable impactful programs for the most vulnerable pediatric patients.

We are so grateful to be able to share Natalie’s experience and how it inspired her to continue making an impact in communities ❤️
