🪳 Lousy Monday Lice Fact #26: Blood Feeders

Head lice are tiny blood feeders. They survive by drinking small amounts of blood from the scalp, kind of like mosquitoes, but they stay close to their favorite restaurant!

Each louse pierces the scalp just enough to draw a drop of blood. They feed several times a day, which is why the scalp can get itchy or irritated. The itching isn’t from the bite itself, but from a mild allergic reaction to the lice’s saliva.

🪳 Lousy Monday Lice Fact #25: Oldest Evidence

Did you know head lice have been bugging humans for over 10,000 years? 😳

A 10,000-year-old fossilized louse egg was found in Brazil, still attached to a human hair!

This tiny find gives us a glimpse into our prehistoric past and proves that lice have been loyal (and annoying) human companions since the Stone Age. 🪳💇‍♀️

So if your family is dealing with lice today, you’re definitely not alone — it’s one of humanity’s oldest shared experiences!

🪳 Lousy Monday Lice Fact #24: Six Claws

Those six legs are why lice are so good at staying put once they find a warm, comfy scalp. They grip tightly, which is also why brushing alone doesn’t get rid of them. Treatments need to target both the live lice and their eggs (nits) for complete removal.

So if your Monday feels like it’s clinging on for dear life — remember, you’ve got something in common with a louse! 😅

🪳 Lousy Monday Lice Fact #23: Lice on Airplanes

✈️ Ugh, it’s one of those Mondays… and we’re talking about lice on planes. Yep, as if the middle seat wasn’t bad enough! 😩

Here’s the itchy truth: lice don’t fly (thankfully), but they can spread if heads touch seat backs, shared pillows, hats, or headphones — all things that happen a little too easily during long flights. So if your little one comes home from a trip scratching, don’t blame the peanuts 🥜… it might be those sneaky travel hitchhikers.

✈️🪳 Travel tip: keep hair up, avoid sharing items that touch the head, and give everyone a quick post-trip head check.

🪳 Lousy Monday Lice Fact #22: Lice are cold-blooded

Lice are cold-blooded (ectothermic)!

That means their body temperature depends completely on their surroundings — and in their case, that’s you (or another host).
Here’s what that means for them:

• 🧠 They need body heat to survive. Lice live close to the scalp because it’s warm (around 98°F / 37°C), which keeps their body functions working properly.
• 💧 They can’t regulate temperature. If they fall off the head or body and lose that warmth, they quickly become sluggish and can die within a day or two.
• 🪳 They time their life cycle around the host’s warmth. The warmth helps their eggs (nits) hatch—cooler temperatures slow this down or stop it altogether.

So in short: lice rely entirely on the host’s body heat. Off the head, they get cold, slow, and eventually die — that’s why keeping them off the human scalp for even 24–48 hours can break their survival cycle.

🪳 Lousy Monday Lice Fact #21: Lice Evolution

Did you know lice evolved right alongside humans? 👕

Scientists believe head lice and body lice became two separate species when humans first started wearing clothes — about 100,000 years ago!

So technically… lice were our first fashion critics. 😅

These tiny ancient hitchhikers have been part of human history for millennia — but thanks to Lice Lifters®, they don’t stand a chance today. 💪✨

🪳 Lousy Monday Lice Fact #20: Lice Don’t Burrow

It’s a common worry: “Do I need to throw away or deep clean my pillows if someone has lice?”

The truth: No!

✔️ Lice don’t burrow. Their claw-like legs are made to cling to hair shafts, not fabric or stuffing.

✔️ They can’t survive long off the head. Without the warmth of the scalp and regular blood meals, lice usually die within 24–36 hours.

✔️ Eggs (nits) won’t hatch off the head. They need scalp heat and humidity to develop, so any that fall onto bedding are not a threat.

✔️ Washing the pillowcase is enough. A hot wash and dry cycle is plenty to kill any stray lice.

👉 So rest easy—your pillow is safe. Focus on proper treatment of the scalp and hair, not the bedding.

09/22/2025

🪳 Lousy Monday Lice Fact #19: Crawl Speed

Here are the facts on how lice move on flat surfaces like the floor (vs. hair):

• Lice are built for hair, not floors. Their claw-like legs are specialized for grasping round hair shafts, not smooth surfaces.

• On hair: They can crawl at about 9 inches per minute (pretty slow already).

• On smooth surfaces (like floors, furniture, or clothing): They move much more slowly and often awkwardly, since their claws can’t grip. Some sources note they may barely move at all before becoming weak.

• Survival: Even if they end up on the floor, they generally die within 2-3 days without a blood meal and scalp warmth.

👉 So, on a floor, lice are not fast crawlers—they’re clumsy, sluggish, and unlikely to travel far enough to find another head.
