Today, on World Prematurity Day, we honor all of the tiniest babies that are born prematurely, and cared for in the NICU. One of those tiny babies, was Avery Schalmo.

After spending 147 days in the NICU at Manning Family Children’s, baby Avery Rae is finally home and thriving! Born at just 25 weeks and weighing only 1 pound, 6 ounces, Avery faced incredible challenges including emergency surgery for a bowel perforation, infections, retinopathy of prematurity, and tiny fractures in her arms, ribs, and legs from extreme prematurity. Through it all, her strength and determination never wavered, and her dedicated team of doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, and therapists supported her every step of the way. Avery Schalmo's story is one of true perseverance and a testament to the incredible nurses and doctors that not only take care of medical needs, but also emotional needs. For many families, the NICU becomes home away from home as their babies gain strength and grow, and the nurses and doctors become like family. At Manning Family Children's Level IV NICU, we care for the tiniest, most critical babies to give them a chance to live their lives, because they deserve that chance.

"Yo no tengo la ayuda de nadie y para que ellos me ayudaran en los momentos más difíciles. Fue una ayuda mayor para nosotros. Si no fuera por los doctores y las enfermeras y todo el equipo de Manning Family Children's, yo no sé cómo yo hubiera superado todo esto."

Hezekiah Martínez acababa de cumplir dos años cuando su familia recibió la devastadora noticia: tenía leucemia mieloide aguda. El diagnóstico llegó solo tres días antes de su cumpleaños. Durante su estancia en el hospital, el excepcional equipo de médicos y enfermeras que cuidó de su hijo con compasión y profesionalidad se convirtió en parte de su familia. Recientemente, Hezekiah se sometió con éxito a un trasplante de médula ósea y, increíblemente, su madre, Lidia, resultó ser compatible y pudo ser su donante. Hezekiah Martínez had just turned two years old when his family received the devastating news: he had acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The diagnosis came only three days before his birthday. Throughout their time at the hospital, the exceptional team of doctors and nurses who cared for her son with compassion and skill, became like family.​ Hezekiah recently underwent a successful bone marrow transplant, and, incredibly, his mom, Lidia, was a match and able to serve as his donor. ​ His family is forever grateful to his care team who supported them through some of the toughest times in their lives.

Ángel padecía una enfermedad renal crónica en fase terminal con tan solo 13 años. Él y su familia viajaron desde Honduras al Manning Family Children's para recibir la atención especializada que necesitaba para sobrevivir. Fueron recibidos con los brazos abiertos por un equipo de médicos y enfermeros en quienes la familia confió plenamente para salvar la vida de Ángel. Hace un año, Ángel recibió un trasplante de riñón que le salvó la vida. La familia está eternamente agradecida al equipo del Manning Family Children's.

We are so excited to celebrate the holiday season with you at this year's 4th annual Manning Family Children's Holiday Parade on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at 11 am in downtown New Orleans. ❄️⛄🕎🎄 The event, which has been nominated for the second year in a row as a USA TODAY 10Best holiday parade nominee among USA Today readers, is back with its traditional downtown New Orleans route and signature throws.

Today, we welcomed Archie Manning to crown three special patients as the 2025 Holiday Parade King and Queens, announced special new updates and additions to this year's parade, and kicked off the holiday festivities with a special performance from the LCMC Health Heart Beat marching krewe!
