"When a once-eradicated parasitic fly reemerged in parts of Mexico and Panama three years ago and began infecting cattle and other animals with flesh-eating maggots, it set off alarm bells hundreds of miles away in the United States.

Caleb Hubbard, Ph.D., an assistant professor of urban entomology in New Mexico State University’s Department of Entomology, Plant Pathology and W**d Science, was among the many concerned as New World screwworm infections began spreading across Mexico."

The EPPWS department is going to be participating in the 1888 Minutes of Giving!

"Be part of the 1888 Minutes of Giving movement! It’s a powerful event when Aggies everywhere unite to create lasting impact! Every gift, big or small, fuels scholarships, drives innovation, and champions student success across all our campuses. Together, we’re not just supporting students — we’re empowering dreams, igniting opportunities, and building a brighter future for Aggie Nation."

We are proud to highlight the continued growth of the PhD program in the 1888 Minutes of Giving! We invite you to support the EPPWS Campaign by sharing with your personal and professional networks including stakeholders, industry, partners and other constituents. All support will play a role in shaping the future for our graduate students. This fund is to provide resources such as graduate assistantships, research supplies, conference travel opportunities, scholarships, and growth of the new EPPWS GSO. This will allow our graduate students to advance their research and engage with the academic and professional community. In turn, they will have the opportunity to develop the skills needed to become leaders in their fields.

Thank you for all your support! 😊

Discover fascinating insights into harvester ants, their behavior, ecological roles, and ongoing research from an experienced extension entomologist. This episode highlights the complexity of seed foraging, species diversity, and how ants contribute to ecosystems and land management.

In this episode:

Meet Dr. Joanie King, extension entomologist at New Mexico State University
The behavior and role of harvester ants in arid and semi-arid environments
How seed preferences vary among different harvester ant species and their impact on restoration efforts
Exploring the diversity of harvester ants such as Pogonomyrmex and Novomessor species

The Department of Entomology, Plant Pathology and W**d Science is proud to announce the launch of a Ph.D. in Applied and Agricultural Biology—a major milestone for the department and the university.

This new doctoral program expands graduate opportunities and reflects the department’s commitment to advanced, interdisciplinary research that addresses real-world challenges in agriculture and biological sciences. The Ph.D. in Applied and Agricultural Biology provides rigorous training in areas such as insect science, plant disease management, w**d science, and integrated agricultural systems, preparing graduates for leadership roles in research, teaching, extension, and industry.

With this program, students will engage in innovative, applied research while working closely with faculty mentors to develop solutions that support sustainable agriculture, food security, and environmental stewardship.

We are excited to welcome the first cohort of Ph.D. students and look forward to the impactful research and scholarship this new program will foster.
