We’re celebrating & honoring our Black Birthworkers, Granny midwives & the Black Matriarchs who have paved the way for all babies to be born safely & their parents supported.
“The history of birthwork traces back to the Transatlantic Slave Trade, where knowledge from West African birth traditions survived the Middle Passage and was brought to the United States. These medical practitioners, equipped with indigenous wisdom, took care of enslaved pregnant people, their babies, and even pregnant slaveholders. Post-emancipation, “granny midwives,” as they were called, took care of pregnant people of all races across the country, often being the only care providers, especially in rural communities. This month, we celebrate the rich history of our birthworking ancestors, such as Biddy Mason, Mary Frances Hill Coley, and recently, Dr. Janell Green Smith. These women and others created a path for current and future birthworkers to embrace strength, resistance, and an unwavering commitment to reproductive advocacy to ensure that Black folks get the care they need and deserve.
is a promise & a commitment✊🏿
