Posted • In this picture I’ll be congratulating myself, the amount of dedication and sacrifice it took to open the barbershop at times was overwhelming but Looking back at the year I’m proud of the foundation I’ve created. The shop has changed me in many ways but the one that I love the most is skill of understanding others around me, allowing people to be comfortable and share their stories while in the chair. The life of your shears is determined by how skilled your sharpener is. On average a pair of shears can be sharpened about 30 to 40 times and each time they are sharpened material must be removed. Chips and nics greatly reduce the life of your shears too...my sharpening process removes the tiniest amount of material that helps maximize the life of your shears. I often get asked why shears are so expensive, the quality of materials and craftsmanship are the main drivers.
The steel used in the manufacturing of your shears is largely responsible for the price that you pay and determines how long your shears will perform without needing to be serviced. The bottom line is that you may pay a higher price up front, but you will save time and money later... The steel grades from highest to lowest are as follows:
• Hitachi ATS 314
• Hitachi 440C
• V10 (VG10)
• V1 (VG1)
• 440C
• 440A
