My son doesn’t always want to take a nap, but I always do. It’s a feeling that’s been hard to shake ever since I became a parent nearly two years ago. And while I’m persistently tired now, my fatigue levels were downright dangerous during those earliest days when I knew I was too sleep-depri...

MILK SUPPLY
Milk supply is one of the most common concerns among breastfeeding moms, because unlike with a bottle, you just can't tell how much milk your baby is getting. To make sure you're both on the right track, your pediatrician will monitor his weight closely, especially for the first several weeks.

In the meantime, pay attention to his diapers: He should have six to eight wet ones and at least two "seedy," mustard-colored stools daily by the time he's seven days old. Also keep this in mind: "As long as your baby is gaining weight consistently and his diapers show that he is eating enough, you can assume that he's getting plenty of milk," says Jeanette Panchula, R.N., P.H.N., I.B.C.L.C., a lactation consultant at the Solano County Department of Public Health and the California Department of Public Health's Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health division. If you're still concerned, schedule a weight check with your pediatrician.

BREASTFEEDING TIP: How to Get a Deep Latch

Position yourselves nose to ni**le, belly to belly. "Make sure that your baby's stomach is touching yours, so she doesn't have to turn her head to latch. And point your ni**le at her nose, not at her mouth, so she'll lift her head up, open her mouth wide, and latch on deeply." – Jacobsen

Encourage a mouthful. "If you're breastfeeding sitting upright, bring your baby to your breast once his mouth is completely open. Press between his shoulders firmly to bring him to you, while you support your breast. Your ni**le will fill the roof of his mouth. If it still hurts after the first few sucks, de-latch and reposition." – Brown

Don't push the back of your baby's head. "That triggers his instinct to resist and chomp down. Instead, put your hands at the nape of your baby's neck, and bring him swiftly to your breast." – Leigh Anne O'Connor, IBCLC, lactation consultant in New York City

Breast pump TUBING tip:
If you see condensation or water droplets in your tubing at the end of a pumping session, disconnect the bottle with breast shield, leaving only the tubing attached to the pump. Run the pump for 3 - 4 minutes until the tubing is dry. (Turn the vacuum strength up to maximum for quickest drying.)
