We are excited to highlight some of our incredible midwives & nurses in honor of & throughout the month! 🫶🏼
Meet Certified Nurse Midwife Joanna Dunleavy!
💕 Can you share a brief summary of your road to midwifery? Where did you go to school?
“My first job in nursing was as an RN in a hospital birth center. There I worked with a great team of midwives who honored physiologic birth. Some of my favorite deliveries were with them on the team.
Getting to work closely with those midwives in lowa inspired me to go back to school for midwifery. I chose Frontier Nursing University for my education as they have such a strong history and tradition with midwifery in the US.”
💕 Can you tell us about your current practices & role?
“l am a midwife with WHASN City Center, where I am able to provide full-scope midwifery care. I also attend deliveries at Summerlin Hospital Birthing Place.”
💕 What do you enjoy doing when you’re not midwifing?
“When I’m not working, l enjoy spending time with my husband and our two dogs. We love to stay active by going to the gym and hiking. We are newer to Las Vegas so we love to explore what the Valley has to offer when it comes to outdoors and performing arts.”
💕 If you weren’t a midwife, what would you be?
“If I wasn’t a midwife, I would be a professional dog walker. When in school, I had a few dogs I walked regularly and it was the best!”
💕 What are some pearls of wisdom you would like to share with nursing or midwifery students?
“The best thing I have done was getting experience in a wide variety of atmospheres. I’ve lived and worked in small town lowa and rural Illinois prior to coming to Las Vegas. There is so much to learn from a new place. Take the risk. Take the challenge. Don’t be afraid to branch out from what you are use to.”
Thanks for all you do Joanna! 💕 Nevada is proud to have you!
