We love seeing our NTMC Family making waves! 💜

Shoutout to Brie Pierre, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, CLC, CNT, NTMTC, for being featured in The ASHA Leader!

Brie and her colleagues are doing incredible work at Texas Children's Hospital, building a NICU feeding follow-up clinic that bridges the gap from hospital to home for medically fragile infants and their families.

So proud to call her one of our own!

NICU parents need more than a list of surgical risks when their baby is being scheduled for surgery.

Different levels of support matter.

Parent-to-Parent mentoring, a space to discuss feelings during medical consultations, access to embedded psychological support, and ensuring parents' physical health needs are met can help support parents during their infant's surgery.

NICU Post-Op Care in the NICU shoulc include the baby's parents too.

Studies show that when we keep parents involved in care post-op can help to reduce worsening feelings of helplessness and minimize their stress.

A gentle hand hug from Dad or hearing Mom’s voice during cares can make all the difference—for both baby and parents.

NICU Parents need special care, just like their post-op baby.

In this recently published study, parents whose baby may need surgical intervention reported a need for:
(1) clear and empathetic communication,
(2) empowerment to be involved in caregiving tasks, and

Positioning matters! In fact, ideal positioning was associated with lower pain scores (NPASS) and using an objective tool like the IPAT (Infant Positioning Assessment Tool) can help achieve flexion, alignment, containment and comfort!

Family centered rounds might seem like a long shot for your bustling and busy unit—but what if you start small…could the team designate one person to bring parents out to the hallway or call them to be included at the end of bedside rounds? Including parents helps them to be more involved, ask questions, and provide their input as an important member of the team.
