For generations, Black behavior has been misread as a threat.

So today, when a Black child is:

overwhelmed
unable to process a demand
struggling to communicate

they are still called:

“aggressive”
“defiant”
“noncompliant”

Instead of:

human
sensory overloaded
needing support

This is why culturally competent ABA matters.

This is why representation matters.

This is why Spectrum Squad exists.

We are changing the narrative from:

control → to → compassion
compliance → to → communication
punishment → to → support

That is Black history in real time.
Spectrum Squad is honored to be a part of the movement working to change the cultural disparities children of color face every single day ...with and without a diagnosis.

Today we closed for Staff Development ✨BCBA Marissa led our training for the day and completely knocked our socks off not only with her knowledge but with her genuine compassion for our field.

Connection. Compassion. Consistency

These are the three pillars of Spectrum Squad and we are committed to providing quality care to the population we serve.

We are BEYOND honored to walk alongside each and everyone of our kiddos and their amazing families. 🙌🏾💕

Black History & ABA ✨

Dr. Francis Cecil Sumner was the first Black psychologist in U.S. history and the founder of Black psychology. While he wasn’t an ABA clinician (ABA didn’t formally exist yet), his work laid the ethical and cultural groundwork that modern ABA must stand on.

Why he matters to ABA 👇🏾
• He challenged the idea that behavior and intelligence could be separated from culture and environment
• He fought against deficit-based views of Black children
• He emphasized context, systems, and social conditions ....all things we now assess in ethical ABA
• He trained generations of Black psychologists who pushed psychology toward equity and accountability

Without pioneers like Dr. Sumner, behavior science risks becoming mechanical instead of humane.

Why ABA Matters in Black History

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has played a powerful role in expanding access to support for Black children and families...especially in communities that have historically been underserved or misunderstood by healthcare and education systems.

For decades, Black families faced late diagnoses, limited services, and cultural bias that shaped how behaviors were interpreted and treated. ABA (when practiced ethically, culturally responsive, and family-centered) has helped shift that narrative by focusing on skill-building, communication, independence, and dignity, not punishment or conformity.

Black scholars, clinicians, and advocates have pushed the field forward by asking harder questions:
• Whose culture is centered in treatment?
• Are families true collaborators?
• Does therapy honor the child’s identity and community?

Leaders like Trina D. Spencer have emphasized cultural humility, assent-based care, and equity, reminding us that effective ABA must adapt to the child—not the other way around.

Black history isn’t just something we reflect on...it’s something we build on by delivering care that is inclusive, affirming, and rooted in trust.

✨ This month, we honor the past and commit to a future where every child gets the support they deserve.

When a child elopes, it’s not “random” and it’s not “bad behavior.”
Children typically elope for one of two reasons:

➡️ They’re running toward something
A preferred item, a fun activity, a sensory experience, or a place that feels exciting or regulating.

⬅️ Or they’re running away from something
A task that feels overwhelming, loud environments, demands they don’t yet have the skills to navigate, or feelings they don’t know how to communicate.

Elopement is communication.
It’s a child telling us “I need something different right now.”

At Spectrum Squad, we don’t just try to stop the behavior .. we focus on understanding the why, teaching safe and functional alternatives, and building skills so our kiddos can get their needs met without putting themselves in danger.

Behavior always has meaning.
Our job is to listen.

Wait… you talk to my mom?”

One of our favorite moments in therapy is when a kiddo on the spectrum realizes something very important:

We communicate with their family.
We share updates.
We celebrate their wins at home and in session.
And yes… we even have pictures of them 😄📸

You can literally see the surprise on their face when they realize their world is connected. That therapy doesn’t exist in a bubble. That the people who love them most are part of the team.

For so many of our kiddos, it’s powerful to know:
“My family knows what I’m working on.”
“My progress matters outside this room.”
“I’m supported everywhere.”

ABA isn’t just about skills ...it’s about relationships, trust, and building a bridge between therapy and real life. And when our kids see that bridge? That’s where the magic happens ✨

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” — Martin Luther King Jr.

For children with disabilities, injustice doesn’t always look loud.
Sometimes it looks like exclusion.
Sometimes it looks like limited access to education, healthcare, or support.
Sometimes it looks like being misunderstood.

Dr. King’s words remind us that equality isn’t selective. If any child is left behind, we all have work to do.

At Spectrum Squad, we believe every child deserves dignity, opportunity, and care that meets them where they are. Advocacy for children with disabilities is civil rights work.

Today, we honor the legacy by continuing the work.
