My goal in life is to cultivate equanimity within myself…finding balance. The essence of equanimity is acceptance and curiosity. Acceptance allows for a sense of contentment with wherever I am in life; whereas, curiosity spearheads growth.

I am constantly trying to be mindful and less reactive and attached to situations around me. There is so little that we have actual control over other than our reactions to what’s happening around us. Fear of uncertainty is a product of us realizing we don’t have control over the situation.

Thus, identifying when surrendering or preserving is the right action in a situation. Today, I preserved and achieved a workout goal after working all day, but then I surrendered into a bubble bath to recharge. My actions today were small steps that build the foundation for when I begin to experience things that are more challenging.

What do you do to find equanimity? Answer in the comments!

New blog post on medical care in India and how my vision fared in November.

Warning lots of vulnerability in this post:

During November, my eyes progressively and substantially worsened. During this time, the floaters went from a few at a time to hundreds. I begin to see near constant clouds (or what could be described as fog or smoke) floating through my vision. The scariest thing that began to happen was that lights would appear to flicker on and off. My vision would go totally black and disappear for just a moment but this started happening multiple times a day. Furthermore, I began to have a spot in my vision which was moving and present in both eyes at the same location. When not focusing on it, it looked as though the spot was blinking, but with focus it was squiggly lines moving from the outside of a circle to the inside of the circle. This spot was most evident when looking at either the sky or a body of water but was always constantly there. Needless to say, my eyes were not improving and I began to worry that I would completely lose my vision if we couldn't figure out the cause. Since I am nearly deaf in one ear (which has been present since I was a child) and I use my vision to read lips to supplement my hearing, this truly terrified me. It felt as though if I lost my vision, I would lose a majority of my hearing at the same time.

Through the days of my vision loss, there have been highs and lows. Days to cheer & days to plan for the worst and hope for the best. I’ve had every emotion. I attempt to live as normally as possible.

At my next Drs appointment and after nearly 8 months of progressive vision loss, the plan was to start immunosuppressants (high dose steroids) to attempt to stabilize my vision loss. The high doses wouldn’t be a long term solution but would give my medical team an idea if treatment would work or not. Eventually, a long term solution would need to be determined as they would need to weigh the benefits (stabilized vision) & the risks (susceptible to infections).

With a global pandemic, being immunosuppressed and flying on a weekly basis for diagnostic exams to monitor treatment response is unlikely to be advised. Is this disappointing? Absolutely. Is it going to be difficult to watch my vision get worse? It’s beyond frustrating.

I say this to put the pandemic in prospective and perhaps tug on a heartstring that others should be taken into account. My entire professional career has been managing treatment for those with infections. While the majority of people should not be personally concerned about COVID-19, there is a subset of the population that an infection can literally mean life or death. Most people will get a mild cold; however, they have a potential to infect those at risk (elderly, immunocompromised, medical illnesses).

To help those at risk:
Avoid stockpiling items. Buy only what you will use. Others may need things like hand sanitizer, wipes, soap, cleaning supplies & masks to survive.

If you feel sick, avoid public spaces and stay home away from those who are at risk.

Check in on those who are at risk (remember disabled are often forgot in public policy). Offer help in whatever way you can. Maybe you pick up their groceries. Maybe you just listen to them.

Be smart in your choices: wash your hands or use hand sanitizer when not available. Avoid going to work when sick. Avoid large gatherings.
